It was a cold, wet morning and my colleague asked if I would join him at Independence GC (Midlothian, VA) for one early round so he could prepare for his trip back home to Japan later that afternoon. Since they were doing some maintenance on the course that morning we started the round off of the back 9, hole 10. Both of us were playing relatively well that day however nothing to overly proud of. We made the turn and I was 7 over.
As we seemed to breeze through the first 6 holes of the front 9 holes (back 9 of the day) we came up on to hole #7. A par 3 170 yard hole from the grey tees which we were playing that day. The tees were up to about 155 yards where we figured the hole was 165 yards from tee to hole uphill. Wind was a light right to left breeze, just slightly moving the flag in the distance.
I struck the ball as pure and clean as I could have and as I remember it, time slowed down... The ball slightly faded and as it began it's decent. I could feel the adrenaline start to release. The ball then hit the surface of the green with a soft bounce, followed by one more then it was gone... Captain Nobuyuki Murakoso and I shared a margarita afterward as I did the duty of purchasing everyone a drink in the clubhouse. Thankfully it was cold and quite empty that day...
A dream come true.
