Wedge loft refers to the angle of the clubface, which directly influences trajectory, distance, and gapping. Proper loft gaps between wedges will create consistent distance gapping on full-swing shots and ensure each wedge in your bag is serving a distinct purpose. For most players, loft gaps of 4°-6° achieve appropriate yardage gaps.
Wedge Loft Guide:
PW: 44-48°
GW: 50-52°
SW: 54-56°
LW: 58-60°
Wedge bounce is the angle created between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole or trailing edge. This is the area of the club that hits through the ground as it contacts the ball. The greater the wedge bounce degree, the higher the leading edge is off the surface at address. Having the proper wedge bounce and grind option promotes optimal contact, control, and ball spin. In fact, Bob Vokey says that “bounce is your friend,” because it provides forgiveness on all wedge shots, allowing you to still strike the ball properly even if you make mistakes.
Wedge Bounce Guide:
Low bounce wedges are typically between 4°-6°, ideal for firm turf conditions and bunkers with harder or coarse sand. Low bounce wedges can be used to hit high flop shots off tight lies near the green. Low bounce wedges are also useful to players with shallower attack angles and minimal divots.
Mid bounce wedges range between about 7°-10° and are most played on firm to normal turf—great for creating shots around the green, as they help achieve exact distance and trajectory control. This wedge bounce type is well-suited for almost all swing types, while favoring a neutral swing style with a moderate attack angle.
High bounce wedges are those with more than 10° of bounce, designed for softer turf, fluffy lies, and bunkers with soft sand. High bounce wedges are ideal for players who take deep divots or have a steep attack angle, as well as any player wanting to prevent the leading edge from dragging too much in the sand.
Wedge grind is the manipulation or removal of material from the sole of the club, helping to improve interaction through the turf or sand. Grinds allow for more creativity, consistency, and forgiveness around the green, providing the correct contact on the face and added confidence to flight the ball lower with more spin.
Vokey's Tour-proven wedge grinds have each been meticulously developed through years of working with the best players in the world. The variety of Vokey grinds gives players the versatility in their bag to hit any wedge scoring shot with confidence. When using a perfectly fit wedge grind, you can trust that the club is going to do more of the work, even on difficult shots.
New wedges improve short‑game performance by restoring spin consistency and improving contact through the turf. Fresh grooves are the fastest path to a sharper short game. As grooves wear, spin becomes harder to control—especially from rough, wet lies, and greenside shots. Fresh grooves help maintain predictable launch, spin, and stopping power.
When combined with a proper fitting to find your ideal mix of loft, bounce, and grind options, new wedges promote cleaner strikes, consistent distance control, and more reliable results around the green.
