Even the Duffers Get Lucky Sometimes

Even the Duffers Get Lucky Sometimes

I’m 54 now and having taken up golf again 3 years ago after a 17-year hiatus. I wish I could tell you I’m the best golfer ever and I shoot Titleist golf balls all the time, but I would be lying. The fact is I’m a duffer, I use whatever golf balls I can find (rummage sales, on the course while I’m looking for my lost ball, etc.). Many of these balls are indeed Titleist (I wonder why?), and if it’s in good shape I always use my Titleists last. Which brings me to my story of how I had a hole-in-one. On July 27, 2019 I was playing in a scramble tournament with 3 friends at the Broadlands Golf Club in North Prairie, WI. I had gone through my supply of non-Titleist golf balls and my tee shot on the previous hole had gone off in the rough. While we were looking for my lost Titleist my best friend found a golf ball and gave it to me. We never found the Titleist. We started on #14, so the next hole was our 9th hole of the day. Hole #4, a par 3, 149 yards from the white tees. So, with water on the right, I of course used the ball my friend had just found for me. I didn’t even stop to wash it. I figured it was going to get a good washing soon enough. I was pretty windy on this day, so I decided to use a nice easy swing with my 5 Wood. Immediately on contact the group was yelling what a great shot it looked like (this does not usually happen after one of my shots). It landed on the front of the green to the left of the pin and started rolling towards the pin at the backside middle of the green getting closer and closer and then it just disappeared when it crossed the pin. I just said “did that just happen”. And then I was sure it went in. Everyone was yelling and running to the left and right and to see if the pin was hiding the ball. But we could not see the ball. Now I had to wait for the other 3 guys to hit their tee shots and then we preceded up to the green. I crept up on the hole real slow and there was my ball at the back of cup. I can say with certainty that I’ve never eagled a hole in my life before this hole-in-one and I can say with ABSOLUTE certainty that I am very thankful I came back to golf. BTW, in this scramble tournament I ended up with a net loss of 9 golf balls, including more than a few Titleists, but not my new most beloved ball: Yes, a Pinnacle practice ball, the perfect ball for a duffer to get a hole-in-one.
