Green Meadows Glory
By Andrew S On January 25, 2021
I was limping to a weak finish at the friendly confines of Green Meadows Golf Course in Mt. Holly, NC. After a hot start my wedges had betrayed me. Stomping up to the technically reachable #17, par 4 tee box I was armed with only my trusty cally (sorry) XR Speed Driver and a "devil-may-care" attitude that only a 14 handicapper can feel.
My driving had been decent all day, belying my otherwise pedestrian round. #17 was no different. The last 30-40 yards to the blind pin were down hill on short grass. I just needed to get it over the crest approximately 260 yards away. That is close to the maximum range for my 42 year old body....but doable.
My shot rang out. Hard, straight, and true.
Being a blind tee shot, my playing partner and I agreed that it could potentially reach the green. A rare thing for us on any Par 4.
As we approached the green we were greeted with excitement from the gentlemen playing ahead of us. Initially I thought I had accidentally hit into them because there was a ball on the far side of the green. But as we approached we realized their excitement was one that has been shared by golfers spread out among space and time. The Ace!
I retrieved my small yellow ball and held it high for all to see. A quick flash of the camera and a few deep breaths and the moment was over. I sprayed the obligatory final drive of the day far to the right. But the golf gods can be kind and I was allowed to finish the day with a solid par and a generous 82 final score on the par 70 course.
