PGA TOUR | Barbasol Championship
Trey Mullinax, secured his first career PGA TOUR title at the Barbasol Championship, topping fellow Pro V1x golf ball loyalist and playing partner Kevin Streelman with a birdie on the 72nd hole.
- The victory also made Mullinax the final official entrant to this week’s Open Championship at St. Andrews. It will mark his first-ever Open Championship start.
- The winner, who carries four Vokey Design SM9 wedges, leaned on his scoring clubs all week, leading the field in SG: Approach (8.66) and Greens in Regulation (81.9%), and ranking 2nd in Birdies (27).
- He also added a NEW Titleist TSR3 (15.0°) fairway metal to the bag this week, continuing the momentum of the TSR line’s early success since its introduction two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship.
- Mullinax topped a leaderboard that included each of the top five finishers trusting Titleist golf balls for their success.
- Mark Hubbard (Pro V1) vaulted to solo 3rd following a final round best 7-under 65, two shots behind Streelman.
- Titleist topped the field once again in drivers with 51, which included 22 NEW TSR models AND fairway metals with 64, including 28 NEW TSR’s (including the winner).
PGA TOUR | Genesis Scottish Open
The winner of the Genesis Scottish Open played two Vokey Design wedges, as every player in the Top 9 positions on the leaderboard played a Vokey.
- That list includes Titlest Brand Ambassador Brandon Wu, who closed in 3-under 67 to finish T6 and earn one of the final three qualifying spots into this week’s Open Championship.
- Jamie Donaldson (Pro V1x) also earned a tee time Thursday at the Old Course with his T6 finish.
SCOTTISH OPEN CHAMPION WINS AGAIN WITH LIGHTER SM9 LOB WEDGE
- The winner of the Genesis Scottish Open has now earned back-to-back wins playing lighter 60-degree lob wedges inspired by Titleist Brand Ambassador Patrick Cantlay.
- Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill built him the wedges – a SM9 60.06K (@ 61) and SM9 WedgeWorks 60T (@ 61), each with D0 swing weights – after a conversation with the reigning Olympic champion at the Byron Nelson Championship.
- Quoting @vokeywedgerep Aaron Dill: “He’s been in the same two Vokey 60’s for a long time, mainly the T and the K grinds. He occasionally will carry a couple of others, L and S, and he’ll determine which one best fits the conditions that week.
- “At the Byron Nelson, he told me he’d spent a little time chipping with Patrick Cantlay’s lob wedge (62.08M @61) and said he thought the weighting was really interesting.
- “Patrick’s is pretty light – he’s about D1. Most guys are right around D5. He said, ‘I kind of like the way it felt, and I want to try it. What do you think? Should I just go down to D2 or D1?’ (He was previously at D3.) And I said, ‘Let’s take you a step further (D0) and really see if this feels the way you want.’ ”
- He won the Travelers Championship using the 60.06K (@ 61) and the Scottish Open with the 60T (@ 61).
- “By going lighter you’re able to create a little more speed, dial up the spin and hit it a little higher around the greens. He was like, ‘This thing feels so good. I feel like I can throw it through the ball a little faster, create a little more spin, and have a little more height when I want.’ ”
TSR MOMENTUM CONTINUES IN SCOTLAND
- Titleist Brand Ambassador Max Homa – who this week switched to a NEW TSR3 10.0° driver – finished first in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, gaining 4.47 strokes over the field.
- TSR driver users have bested the field in SG: Off the Tee in all three weeks since the NEW TSR metalwoods debuted on the PGA TOUR:
- Titleist Brand Ambassador Davis Riley moved into a TSR3 8.0° driver at the Travelers Championship, where he averaged a career-best and tournament-leading 1.48 strokes gained off the tee per round. His 2.41 strokes gained off the tee during the final round in Hartford was also the best of his career.
- Titleist Brand Ambassador Cameron Davis achieved his best driving performance of the season at the John Deere Classic, gaining a tournament-best 4.69 strokes on the field. Davis switched to his TSR3 8.0° at Travelers after seeing his ball speeds increase 1-2 mph.
- Also putting the new TSR metals in play for the first time: Cameron Smith (TSR2 10.0°), Cameron Young (TSR3 10.0°, TSR3 16.5°), Will Zalatoris (TSR3 8.0°, TSR2+ 13.0°), Rafael Cabrera Bello (TSR3 10.0°) and the 2013 U.S. Open Champion (TSR4 9.0°).
Max Homa, earlier in the week, on his first impressions of the NEW TSR driver
- “I actually like the sound quite a bit. Sounds like you’re smashing it, which is nice.”
- “I did notice that the spin didn’t change as much when you mishit it. The heel and toe strikes kept the spin a little closer to your good ones. That’s obviously something I think everybody would be happy to have.”
- “It’s a mile an hour faster for me, just ball speed. So, yeah. It just doesn’t feel like any reason not to use it. I hit basically only two types of golf shots with my driver, and they both are still flying very similar. So it feels like a no brainer.”
- Homa was one of 21 players to put NEW TSR drivers in play at the Scottish Open.
- He also added two NEW TSR fairway metals (15.0° & 21.0°).
Cam Smith, earlier in the week, on his first impressions of the NEW TSR driver
- “I changed into the two (TSR2), from the three (TSi3). Love the way it looks. Just the way this one sits, compared to [TSi2], I think is a really big improvement.
- “For me, it just goes a little bit straighter, a little bit more consistent, I think, with the misses. My bad drive is a little bit toey, and that ‘toeyness’ was just not going as far left. So the closer I can keep it to the fairway, the better.”
ELITE AMATEUR SERIES | Trans-Miss Amateur
The winner of the Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship trusted a Pro V1x golf ball and a Scotty Cameron Futura 5W putter to victory at Denver Country Club, rolling in a 22-footer for birdie to win on the second hole of a three-man, all-Titleist golf ball playoff.
- The champion, who entered the week 39th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, closed in 1-under 69 to join the playoff at 9 under.
- Both of his competitors in the extra session played a Pro V1 .
- For the third time in the last four weeks on the EAS, Titleist was the #1 golf ball and top choice of players in every major equipment category.
