Cutting down Diamana 'ahina 72gram Stiff Shaft on 910D3

  1. Hey Guys,

I just had my driver cut down from the standard 45 to 44 inches as I found that I was hitting the ball off the heel quite a lot and I prefer the control of a shorter driver. I went to the range today and the thing felt terrible, due to the change in swingweight I have just found out after doing a bit of research.

My first question is, when cutting down a shaft is it recommended to cut at the grip end rather than the head end? I want to get back to the D4 swing weight which is standard for this club and this shaft at 45 inches. I have ordered the weights so I will put the 12g weight in. I don't believe this will get it back to D4. How much more weight in grams would I need? Would lead tape suffice and if I was to use lead tape what would be the protocol for installing it, i.e. where on the club head, and how long the strips should be?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Rory

    Rory,

When cutting for length, you should cut from the butt end of the club (grip end).  Cutting an inch off the club will reduce the swing weight by close to 6 points.  If you measured the club when it was 45" and it measured to D4 swing weight, then after cutting an inch off the club should weigh close to C8.  Assuming the club was standard at 45" with a 7g bezzel weight, by adding the 12 gram bezzel weight to the club head should bring the swing weight close to D0-D1.  To get the club back to D4, then the club will need close to 6-8 grams added to the head.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Cheers Cameron. Yeah the difference in feel is huge and I'm looking forward to getting the weight back onto the head to get the swing weight right. Club feels light and a bit stiff at the moment.

In terms of getting the extra 6-8 grams added is lead tape the best way? Where would the best place to put it be in your opinion?

    Thanks

Your best place to position the lead tape, would be somewhere on the back of the sole (near the current bezel weight).  This should keep everything as close to consistent as possible.  We've found that adding any one of the bezel weights to the head has no direct influence on ball flight, so the lead tape should should have the same effect.

  5. Cameron,

New question but similar topic. If I were to go get fit and I was fitted for a 44.5 driver and I play a midsize grip. Would Titleist be able to build a club with a D-4 swingweight.

I know this answer depends on the amount of the standard head weight and the weight of the shaft, but I guess my question is can Titleist add Hot melt(internally weight the driver head) to make the driver head to requested specification. I am seriously considering going for a tour fitting but I need to verify this before I shell out the dough for the fitting.

    Information much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Richard

  6. Cheers for the responses guys. Appreciate it.

12 Gram weight plus a New Decade grip at 44.5 grams might get you close. that is if you using hazier grip already.

  8. It surely did Stephen...getting the proper weights really makes a big difference. At least you know that the club will be properly balanced. 12 gram the swing weight feels lovely. Seems even a slight bit weighty...must go to the range and put in the 9 gram weight and compare.

    Looking good though

    Richard,

Due to the weight kits we offer for the 910s, we stopped adding hot melt to achieve swing weights.  To achieve a D-4 swing weight I would need to know what shaft you we would be building the club with.  If we used a stock Titleist Kai'li 65g shaft and added the heaviest 12 gram bezel weight, we could build the club to D-2.5 (heaviest).  The grip would take off 1/2 a swing weight and the -1/2" would take off close to 3 swing weight points, so if the shaft is close to 75grams then D-4 possible.

  10. Wow. Did you get fit for this? An 1" is a lot to cut off from the driver, or any club for the matter. Being that you want to get back to a D4 swingweight...if you add the 12g SureFit weight...you can add lead tape, however, you're going to have to position the tape precisely on the head so you'll get the same ball flight, depending on which setting you have it on. Good luck with everything.

  11. No didn't get fit at all David. Probably should have but sure hindsight is always 20/20. Seems like a lot to take off but evidence is to the contrary. Went out yesterday to the course and was consistently catching the sweet spot. My ball is further than ever before even with the light swingweight which I will fix as it doesn't feel right. Looking forward to experimenting. I have some pre manufactured 3 gram lead weights and I am getting the surefit weight system. Will add the 12 gram to the club but will counteract the potential high launch due to the extra weight on the back by adding the additional weight I need more to the centre of the base of the head. Can't wait to test the difference and see how much further I can hit it. I would regularly hit the ball 300 yds so would be nice to get more but accuracy is what I'm looking for.
