I'm out looking for a new driver.  My normal ball path is a little fade and I'm working on my swing to get a slight draw.  I have never had any success with Titleist drivers but I'm really interested in the 910D2 or D3.  I had success with an R7 with a total length of 44 1/4 inches, currently have an R9 but don't like it.  Any similar golfer and would you recommend the D2.  My swing speed is 96-102 and normally tip a regular shaft.

PS Any fitters in the Santa Rosa area?

Thanks for any help you can give

I'd try both the D2 and D3. It depends on what you want to look at behind the ball, but with all the options and adjustment the Titleist 910 should give you the shape and spin you need. Go get fitted. You may find out you need a stiffer shaft. You never know until to hit it with a launch monitor.

Thanks for the input.......was fitted for my previous R7 and it worked great....got hit by "the latest" bug....sold it and just bought an R9.  Mistake.  Now I need to get fittled again for a new driver.  Expensive mistake....hopefully a D2 or D3 will work great.

    Doug:

I echo Jeff's comments regarding the 910 drivers and the SureFit Tour feature.  With the club's adjustability, there are a number of ways to alter your ball flight and direction with the simple twist of a wrench.  In my experience, the 910 D2 sounds most applicable to your situation, but it would be very beneficial to hit both the D2 and D3 with various shaft options to ensure your money is being put towards the club that is perfectly fit for you.

    All the best,

    DH

Hi Doug,  The closest Advanced Fitter to you is Steve W. over at The Bridges in San Ramon (East Bay).  His number is:  925.735.3091 or up at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento - John or Marcus can help you there - 916-808-2526

Cathi, thanks for the information on the fitters in my area.....not real close to me.  I might try and get fit when I fly to Hawaii this next week, might actually work out better than driving 1.5 or 2 hours each way.

  7. I'd drive 3 hours to get fit for a driver, if I had to. That's how important it is to get fit. There are TONS of various D2/D3 shafts and SureFit settings to help you out. The advanced fitters will have more shafts and stuff to choose from. Either way, just make sure you get fit by an authorized Titleist Rep. Good luck. Keep us up to date on the process.

  8. David that's what I can't figure out. The fitter tried several shafts on me and the one I hit the best and the furthest was the RIP S shaft but he decided on the Basarra 50 HI. I played today again and I noticed how high was hitting the ball, too high I think. My course is pretty soft anyway and I don't need to hit it as high as I did today. I've teed the ball everyway you can imagine too. I am a firm believer in being fit for sure. My irons (JPS 800 were also customed fit. I think it's too much of a crap shoot to buy from the rack. But I'm going to make an appointment with the fitter and have him try me out on the RIP again if there's not that much difference in the carry distance I'm going to the RIP. Thanks for your input.

  9. I've had my new 910 D2 since the 8th of this month. I went through a very extensive fitting process at my local country club (no I wish I was a member) When I tried the RIP shaft in stiff flex I seemed to hit the ball much more solid and further but the pro said since my swing speed was only around 87mph he wanted to put the Bassara 50 Hi regular flex in it. He did , he liked the numbers but it seemed to take away the feel I got with the RIP. I have to say when I first took my driver out I wasn't happy with the feedback I was getting and it was because of the shaft I think and even though I did manage to shoot a one over par 71 in some of the worse conditions I've played in a very long time I am still happy with the feel. Even on dead solid hits the shaft seems to have a vibration in it and the great feeling from the head isn't coming up to my hands. I am considering buying the RIP and using it but as I"ve said I was fit by a pro and want some feedback and other opinions before I'm out the extra money. I do love this driver though and I'm very happy I decided to go with Titlest. I tried the TM Rocket balls along with the 910 and it was much shorter so I think I made the right choice.

    reggie,

i have about the same ss as you do and was fitted to a d3 (because of launch angle issues) with the rip60 shaft.  i have to say, it's one of the best shafts i've played in a driver.  it's so solid that i can really go at it and know that i won't lose the clubhead (unless i just put a plain old bad swing on it).  it plays a little stiffer than rating, but not boardy.  having said that, you may want to try a reg instead of stiff.  good luck!

  11. Hi Fred, My fitter didn't even try me in the D3 and I did ask him about it. I am thinking I'm going to get the RIP shaft anyway and see for myself. I went to the course yesterday and today and on Sunday (yesterday) I was pounding the ball off the tee, around 260-275 total but today when I went I had the same problem as before, the Basarra shaft just does not feel solid even when I hit it on the screws. I'm holding off to see if it's just me, which is certainly possible but the impact tape on the face of the driver says I was hitting it on the screws. It just takes away all the feedback from the face and solid hits. I might see if I can demo a RIP in both the stff and the regular. I've always played a stiff but the pro put me in this R shaft which I have to say I'm not too happy with right now. Also even though I have my driver set on D2 I was hitting it way too high so I'm thinking the shaft might be too weak. I'm going again tomorrow so maybe I can find out. Thanks Fred, Reggie

    reggie,

not surprised you're hitting the ball high - it's not that the shaft is weak.  the bassara is a low kickpoint shaft (both r and s flex), so it's characteristic is to help launch the ball high.  combined with the d2 head, i bet you're seeing launch angles of 15+ degrees.  a d3 head will bring that down some, but you're probably right - the bassara may just be the wrong shaft for you.

maybe your fitter saw something in the spin rates and carry with the bassara.  i'm guessing the rip will bring the launch angle down as well as the spin rate, but you might lose some carry distance.  of course, you may also pick up some roll with the lower spin rate.  don't forget also, that the bassara will drop the overall swingweight of the driver by 1-2 points.  lots to consider.  good luck!

  13. Fred, as I told David above I played again today and paid special attention to the height of my tee shots. All of them were what I consider too high. Although I did hit a couple over 265 total I still think it's too high. The fairways on my course are pretty soft so all I'm getting basically is the carry. Plus you add that Bassara low kickpoint to the actual loft of the driver 10.5 and it's way too much. I'd say you're right about the launch angle of 15 too. But after spending $424 including tax I sure can't afford to buy the D3 as well so I'm hoping the shaft can be ajusted to get it down. Even with my slower SS of 87 I can still swing an S shaft with no problem but I will do it through fitting and not on my own. Again I love the driver but this shaft even when hit dead solid has a slight vibaration to it, it rarely feels solid. Thanks for your input Fred.
