I purchased AP2 irons two months ago and had been fitted. They fitted me with 1/2 longer shafts, 2 degrees up and DG X100 shafts. That was my second fitting session which the first had suggested KBS shafts.

I seem to be losing 1 club length when it comes to distance. I have never hit forged before and am wondering if lack of distance is a result of that or the shaft.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for the question.

Might I suggest comparing the lofts of your old irons to your new irons.  Non forged clubs often have stronger lofts, sometimes resulting in more distance.  But remember, when it comes to irons, distance control and overall control is more important than pure distance.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Bubba

I have been playing AP2 712s since they were introduced in Nov.'11. Prior to that I was playing the 755 Forged. What I have found is that when you strike the sweet spot perfectly, you will see all the distance you might expect. However, miss by just a small amount and you will lose a little.

For a little more forgiveness, I recently switched out my three mid-long irons with the new AP1-714s. I notice that now, my 6 iron distance with the AP1 non-forged, game improvement iron is usually longer than I would normally expect with my AP2 forged iron. However, I still do sometimes play my AP2 6 iron. When I hit it  pure, it is at least as long as the AP1, or longer, with a slightly lower, penetrating ball flight. And the loft on the AP2 is weaker than the AP1. It's just that hitting the sweet spot consistently is more challenging the longer the club. So every time I miss just a little with the AP2, I lose yardage. With the AP1 I lose very little on a slightly off-center hit. And if I miss by an inch I still seem to be able to get good distance. You miss by that much with the AP2 and you'll lose 20 yards.
