Tour Fitting Worth it?

I'm traveling to San Diego from Texas and I can either play at Torrey Pines or go through the Titleist Tour Fitting experience at the testing facility in Oceanside.  I am wondering if the tour fitting is worth it or if I should just take my clubs and play Torrey Pines.

I've been playing for 2 years now and shoot consistently in the low 80's occasional high 70's.  I'd like to eventually get some new clubs (blades) and am considering all options.

Would the Titleist Tour Fitting specs be universal for all manufacturers?  I was fit by another manufacturer at golfsmith with the following specs:

Head Speed (6-iron): 93          Tempo: 5          Toe Down: 3          Kick Angle: 5          Release Factor: 4          Length: Standard          Lie Angle:  61          Loft: Standard

Can someone offer me some feedback regarding the tour fitting and if it's worth it in my situation.  All comments welcome.

I may be biased, but, I think the Tour Fitting is definitely worth it.  It's an awesome place and these fitters are some of the most experienced that fit for Titleist.  They fit and work with our Tour players on an ongoing basis and the matrix they use is the largest in the country.  As far as your specs from another manufacturer, they will be a general guideline.  In other words, you may hit "standard" length and loft" (if their standard is the same as our standard),  and would tend to be flat on the irons.  It really depends on the iron head itself.  If you are going to invest in new clubs (blades), I don't think you can go wrong getting fit for them.

Thanks for the quick reply Cathi!

I am leaning toward signing up for the tour fitting.  What are your thoughts on the 710MB's for a high 70's low 80's player?  I currently play cavity backs from another manufacturer (I know I need to make the switch to Titleist) and I strike the ball very well with my inconsistent play coming from the 3 & 4 iron.

Blades are what I'd like to upgrade to but I'm just unsure b/c what really attracts me to them are their look and  feel which I have read about.  With the cavity backs most strikes feel the same and my distance control is not all that great with my current clubs.  I'd really like to start shooting mid to low 70's, event-though my weakness is scoring b/c I have no problem reaching GIR or under regulation.

You've probably answered this question a million times but I am curious to get your feedback.

    Thanks!

The MB's are about 10% smaller than the CB's and a little less forgiving.  In general, you can play the MB's if you are a good, solid ball striker that hits the ball in the same place on the face and wants to work the ball.  A fitter will be able to show you the difference in launch, spin, distance and dispersion so that you can make a more informed decision as to which model you will be able to play the most consistently.  At O'side, you will be able to hit these side by side, long iron, mid iron and short iron and have the numbers to feel confident that your choice is the correct one.

    Cathi,

is there a Titleist rep in the North Dallas/Richardson, TX area who would be able to provide me with a demo set of the 710 MBs to try out on the course prior to making a purchase decision?

    Hello,

Does anyone know how much a Titleist Tour Fitting session cost?  I am interested in attending the Oceanside facility for driver and iron fitting.  Any knowledge would be appreciated.

    thanks,

Both Oceanside and Manchester Lane offer three separate Tour Fittings.  They can be done individually or all together.  The first is:  Drivers/Fairways, the second is Hybrids/ Irons and the third is Wedges.  Each fitting takes about one hour and the cost is $150.00 apiece.  If you do all three, the total cost is $450 and it is about 3 1/2 hours.  The fittings are done outside on our fairways or our wedge fitting green using a Trackman launch monitor.  The fitters are the same fitters that fit our touring pros and are the best in the country.  There is more information on Titleist Tour Fits at: www.fittingworks.com

    Cathi,

Thanks for the input.  That sounds like a very reasonable price considering the staff I assume will fit my clubs for me.  Looks like that will be my Christmas present to myself.  I will post back with an update once I have gone through the process.  Thanks again.

This past weekend on Nov. 5th I went through the Titleist Tour Fitting process at the Oceanside Facility.  Having never been fitted for any of my clubs before I don't have a large frame of reference, but from what I can tell, it was worth every penny.  The facility was amazing to say the least!  Perfect fairways, ranges, greens, and bunkers.  My fitter was Aaron and I really enjoyed working with him.  He was very knowledgeable and extremely easy and fun to work with.  We found an excellent combination of the right shaft and driver head that worked with my swing.  I went through all of the fittings (Driver, Fairway wood, Hybrid, Iron, & Wedge) and was very pleased with the results that we accomplished.  Another bonus of going there was being able to hit ProV 1x after ProV 1x while on the range.  Made you feel like a pro for just a little bit.

Cathi, It was nice to finally meet you and i'm glad you popped in on my fitting.  I did have one question that Aaron was not sure about though.  Since the driver heads can be easily removed and reconfigured, will the public be able to just buy  separate driver heads and/or shafts?  I was fitted for the 910 D3, but would I be able to buy a 910 D2 driver head down the line and not have to pay for another shaft?  and vice versa, could I buy another shaft and not driver head?

    Thanks,

    Cody

Great to meet you too, Cody...  I'm glad you enjoyed the experience!  It's such an awesome place - we love it when we are able to get the chance to visit.

You will be able to buy separate shafts for your 910 driver, but we won't be selling separate heads.

Just wanted to post an update since I have played a few rounds with my new 710 CB irons and 910 D3 driver that I was fit for at the Oceanside Facility.  Having now gone through a custom fitting, I believe it is the only way to go.

I saw the biggest results from the driver.  Wow!  The club looked amazing right out of the box and it performed even better than I expected.  My carry distance increased by a minimum of 15 yards and drastically improved my roll out after impact.  On solid impact shots, my overall distance has improved by 20-30 yards.  Some of that may be the "winter roll" effect, so will have to see when it warms up a little more.

The irons also looked amazing as soon as I took them out of the box.  The new CB's w/ Dymamic Gold S400 shafts are replacing my 2008 AP2's w/ Project X 5.5 and right away I could feel the difference between the two.  The CB's are much more solid on the sweet spot and definitely provide better feedback.  I don't think there is much of a difference in carry distance or overall distance with any of the irons, but the proper shaft and setting has minimized my misses considerably.

Overall the Tour Fitting was money very well spent and I can't wait to do it again a few years.  Happy Holidays fellow TT members!

I read somewhere that a portion of the full fitting ($450 as listed above) can be used towards new clubs, is that correct and if so how much?  Following the complete fitting do you then order what you want there onsite or are you given the specs/recommended clubs and you order them through local shop?  Thanks much.

The $450 fitting fee is strictly a fitting fee for the 3 1/2 hr fit.  You will be fit for Drivers/Fairways, Hybrids, Irons and wedges.

Your fitter will work with you so that you understand the choices in the fitting specs and afterwards, you will receive an email with all your specs listed so that you can order them through your local pro shop.

Hi Cathi:  I spoke to Andy today, the scheduler at Oceanside, and booked a full fitting session on Feb 18.  I'm very excited and looking forward to the fitting.  One question:  what happens if it's raining or the weather is just bad?  I'll be flying in from Texas so I'll be committed.  Thanks

Normally, weather would not be a concern as sunny San Diego is just that..., but, just in case the weather is bad, they have large tent structures that they put up so that you will be dry and have dry turf.  Let us know how it goes!

Thank you for the quick reply, ok understand the $450 only covers fitting and will not be applied to future purchase.  I like the idea of receiving your recommneded specs to buy on your own.

The places that have the 910 fitting cart right now are the Advanced Fitters and there are several in your area.

Breakers Ocean and Breakers West GC have indoor and outdoor fitting and the fitter to contact there is John Webster.  The phone number at Ocean is:  (561) 659.8474 and the number at Breakers West is:  (561) 659.7316.

Juan Pina at PGA National GC is another of our Advanced Fitters and his number is:  (651) 376.0324

All other fitting accounts will have them within two weeks.

Is Tour Fitting worth it? YES!

Since moving to Mass, Golf has become my #1 sport for the first time in my life.  IMO If you're at all interested in getting a new club, any new club, get fitted.  Since deciding to take Golf more seriously I noticed that there were some sizable distance gaps in my bag.  I've had the same clubs (minus the putter, driver, and hybrid) for the better half of a decade, and decided it's time for an upgrade.  I figured if you're going to do something, do it right.  I live in Mass so I decided to pull the trigger on Tour Fitting.  What an amazing experience.

Manchester Lane is one of the coolest places I've ever been.  It's Mecca for club junkies.  It's a huge outdoor grass facility, with a short game area, fully stocked with every club and shaft under the sun.  I had the whole range pretty much to myself, and it was perfectly manicured and topped off with a full bucket of fresh Pro Vs at my disposal.

I got to try numerous combinations, and having the numbers along with getting to see the actual ball flight, and using the same ball I play was great. It’s nice to go off more than just feel.  My fitter was very patient, knowledgeable, and personable.  I now feel really confident in my club decisions.  I’m amazed at how the smallest differences generate huge results.

If you can, I highly recommend it.

    Hi Cathi,

I am going to be getting a full bag of Titleist equipment in February and was planning to have the fitting done at one of your advanced fitters - Northview CC in  Surrey, BC Canada -as I live in Vancouver.  Do you think it is worth having the fitting done here or should I look to make a trip down to Oceanside?  Would there be a substantial difference?

  34. Cath D.

    Cath D.

If you are already planning a trip stateside, Oceanside would be the best place to be fit.  The fitters that we have, the sheer amount of fitting equipment, monitors and the experience are bar none.    If not, Northview CC would be a great choice, too as they are one of our top fitting accounts.

Don't think twice about it -- do the tour fitting.  I just went through one last week and it is without question the best money you will spend on golf this year.  Going through the entire process, drivers - fairway woods - hybrids - irons - wedges, will teach you more about your own game and how to get the most out of it than you can imagine.  To get the most out of the session, however, don't go in with preconceived notions of what you will and won't accept -- try everything and believe the numbers.  You may be looking for blades, but if a cavity back gives you better consistency, don't fight it.  The real benefit of the tour fitting process is that you can try every configuration of club head, shaft, lie, loft and length imaginable.  This is not a theoretical fitting using computer projected results -- you will hit the exact club you want to, set up the way you want it, using the ball you want to hit, on a full scale, fully instrumented practice facility and get instant feedback on the results -- right down to the landing angle of the ball to determine if the entire shot shape is maximized for your swing.  It really is the exact same process that is offered to tour pros -- I know because one of the LPGA pros was standing 10 yards away from me getting the same service I was getting.  If you do go (and I truly recommend you do), ask for Steve.  He is one of the fitters, and is a real pleasure to work with.

  36. Cath D.

    Cath D.
    Carlsbad, CA

Thank you for your feedback!  I passed on your note to Steve to let him know how happy you were with the fitting.   We couldn't have said it any better - you get the same attention as a touring pro would get. when you go to either Oceanside or Manchester Lane to be fit.

  37. Yes, indeed! A Tour Fitting is worth every single penny. I mean, do you think that those guys/gals, on Tour(s), just buy some clubs "off of the shelf"? No way. They go through a very detailed fitting(s).

The new 710 MB's are absolutely amazing! However, in my own personal opinion, if you're shooting in the low 80's, sometimes in the high 70's, I'd stay away from true blades for the time being. That's just my opinion. If I were you, I'd consider taking a look at the AP2's. Those babies are nice! They have a great feel to them and they're more forgiving than a true blade. I mean, even some of the Pros who have been using baldes their entire career(s), switched to the AP2's, because, they're really such an amazing club(s).

No matter what, just make sure it's fit for YOU! Trust me, you won't regret it! I wish you the best of luck!
