In a previous post I wrote that going to a tour fitting session in Oceanside, CA was the best money one could spend on golf.  I recently had a chance to test that theory when I put the results of my own fitting session in play this past Saturday.

Following my tour fitting session earlier this month, I placed an order that included an 8.5* 909D2 driver with a Grafalloy ProLaunch Red X-stiff shaft (I had previously been playing a 9.5* 909DComp with the stock Ozik xCON-6 S-flex shaft).  I know the 910 is getting all the press these days, but after the fitting session went so well, I couldn't wait and opted for the new 909D2. Seven days after the order arrived at Titleist, the new driver arrived on my doorstep, just in time for a weekend outing at a course I had not previously played.

After a few minutes on the range, our foursome gathered at the first tee -- a 520 yard par 5.  My first swing with the new driver launched a ProV1x 302 yards, to the right hand edge of the fairway, setting up a great approach.  That set the tone for the day with drive after drive averaging 25 yards longer than I was hitting with the DComp.  By the end of the day I had hit 10 of 14 fairways, with the best coming at an uphill, 388 yard dogleg left par 4.  I cut the corner, over a small stand of trees and when I got to where I could see the result, my ball was a mere 10 yards short of the putting surface.  Without qestion this was the best driving round I have ever had and the new equipment was a big reason why.

If you have been thinking about a tour fitting, go for it.  You won't be disappointed and the results are truly measurable.

PS, along with the driver, a new 15.5* 909 F2, Vokey SM2 54.14 and SM2 58.12 arrived.  The new wedges really chewed up a couple of balls during the round, and felt great doing it.  New 710 AP2 irons and an SM2 50.08 are scheduled to ship in Oct and I expect they will perform every bit as well.

    TNF,

Sounds like you are very happy with your new weapons.I have a question for you.Do you know anyone who has gone through the fitting process at the Carlsbad Golf Center, the reason I ask is that they use mats and I wonder why Acushnet does not demand that  all their authorized fitters use grass.I am seriously thinking about flying down from Canada to get fitted in Oceanside.I assume it was a great experience.

I'm not familiar with the Carlsbad facility (and I haven't spoken with anyone that has been there), but Oceanside was great (I wish some of the courses I play on were as well maintained). The whole tour fitting experience was well worth the cost and I look forward to going back next Spring to try out the 910 hybrids. More than just giving me the chance to hit a lot of different head/shaft combinations (and I tried them all), the fitting process really taught me a lot about my game, why certain shots give me problems and how the right equipment can really change everything.  This was a completely different process than the mats and lie board fittings I've had in the past.  Using Trackman (off grass) at Oceanside gave me insight into how different club parameters affect performance in a way I had not previously been exposed to.  Even the wedge course, which is separate from that used for woods and irons, was eye opening because it is set up to allow you to hit full and half shots.  The half shots especially helped in the fitting process because they tend to be the ones I encounter most often during a round.  I guess the best way to state it is that I was for for my complete game, not just tee shots and full swing five irons.  The end result is that i have a new confidence in my equipment which I think has already translated to a better on-course performance.

I'm sure the additional expense associated with the flight and lodgings is not trivial, but I think you would be very well served by a day (or two -- if you opted for the full TPI experience) at the Oceanside facility. They treat you like a king (or at least like a tour pro) and the people are great. It's clear they enjoy what they do and that enthusiasm translates to a great experience for their customers. Even the after-fitting process was extremely well handled.  The retailer made a small data entry when placing my order, but Andy (who coordinates all the tour fitting appointments) caught it and called me right away to make sure I was getting the right set ups when my order was sent to manufacturing.  That kind of service and attention to detail is indicative of the entire tour fitting process.
