In a previous post I wrote that going to a tour fitting session in Oceanside, CA was the best money one could spend on golf. I recently had a chance to test that theory when I put the results of my own fitting session in play this past Saturday.
Following my tour fitting session earlier this month, I placed an order that included an 8.5* 909D2 driver with a Grafalloy ProLaunch Red X-stiff shaft (I had previously been playing a 9.5* 909DComp with the stock Ozik xCON-6 S-flex shaft). I know the 910 is getting all the press these days, but after the fitting session went so well, I couldn't wait and opted for the new 909D2. Seven days after the order arrived at Titleist, the new driver arrived on my doorstep, just in time for a weekend outing at a course I had not previously played.
After a few minutes on the range, our foursome gathered at the first tee -- a 520 yard par 5. My first swing with the new driver launched a ProV1x 302 yards, to the right hand edge of the fairway, setting up a great approach. That set the tone for the day with drive after drive averaging 25 yards longer than I was hitting with the DComp. By the end of the day I had hit 10 of 14 fairways, with the best coming at an uphill, 388 yard dogleg left par 4. I cut the corner, over a small stand of trees and when I got to where I could see the result, my ball was a mere 10 yards short of the putting surface. Without qestion this was the best driving round I have ever had and the new equipment was a big reason why.
If you have been thinking about a tour fitting, go for it. You won't be disappointed and the results are truly measurable.
PS, along with the driver, a new 15.5* 909 F2, Vokey SM2 54.14 and SM2 58.12 arrived. The new wedges really chewed up a couple of balls during the round, and felt great doing it. New 710 AP2 irons and an SM2 50.08 are scheduled to ship in Oct and I expect they will perform every bit as well.
