On Jan. 31st, I went to the Titleist Performance Institute out here in Oceanside, CA. I arrived a few minutes early and was greeted at the back of my vehicle where a staff member gathered my clubs and lead me inside where I filled out a very simple registration form and personal information. I was then shown a very comfortable waiting room and was told that I could have all the coffee or water I wanted and my fitter would be with me in a little bit. Another golfer joined me with his wife in tow for the short wait. Steve Ziff arrived shortly to take me directly out to the fitting area. He asked me simple questions about my game and background. He looked my sticks over to see where he thought we should start. I told him that I had two physical limitations that I was concerned would affect the results we might find. I am almost blind in my left eye from an eye disorder and I have no discs in my lumbar spine between L3,L4&L5. I have had much work done on my back but have not undergone surgery! He allowed me ample time to warm up, then started with the fitting process from the driver, fairway wood, hybrids and irons. He found out that by going heavier in shaft weight, I gained speed and distance! My sticks were too light for me. Almost every choice he made in changing shafts showed a big difference in result and dispersion. All the while, he kept my disabilities at bay as far as the results he was trying to acheive for me! 3 hours of hitting balls with the whole gambit of clubs is tiring to say the least, but somehow Steve managed to keep me focused and fit to finish the fitting! We ended our session with the Bob Vokey wedges. He showed me that I can hit a 60 degree wedge from the sand and from the fairway. I was especially overcome with the results of hitting all the different wedges that he was fitting me for. My results were phenominal to say the least. I've never hit the ball closer to the pins than I did with his suggested wedges! I would whole heartily recommend this complete experience for anyone who's serious about gettting fitted for the best equipment in the game by the best fitter/s in the business!! Thanks Steve for surpassing my wildest expectations in this fitting experience!

OSide is one of the coolest places I have ever been to.  It is a golf junkies dream.  Not only is the club fitting incredible but  the guys that do the physical fitness side of things are the best in the business also.  If you have the time or money to do it I highly suggest it.

That's awesome.  I had a similar experience out east @ Manchester Ln.  It's really amazing what these fitters can do in a couple of hours.  I could have spent weeks playing with all the clubs without getting the same result.  Best of luck this season with your new sticks!

Joshua, in my opinion, the $450.00 price tag was well worth the total fitting experience that you get from the best professional fitters in the business! It takes 3 hours total time and you get fitted for the driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons and wedges! I didn't feel hurried at all by the time or my fitter! He was very diligent only because he has the necessary experience to walk you through every aspect of the fitting process! I had Steve Ziff, Senior Fitting Instructor do my fitting and he was absolutely excellent! With my physical problems, he worked around them like they were'nt even there! As soon as I can find the resourses, Titleist clubs will be in my bag for sure! I hope that the price doesn't keep you from giving yourself this outstanding experience. It will exceed your wildest expectations of what a fitting should be! It did mine, and I've been fitted several times back home in New York State where live. I'm out here in California visiting with my military children and grandchildren and I planned ahead so I could make an appointment for the fitting when I got out here. My Pro back home is a Team Titleist player and that gave me the itch to seek out the testing facilities. The other testing facility is located in Manchester, Mass. Get there if you can, it's worth it!!!!!!

I can honestly tell you that there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that you are in for the golfing experience of your life. Not only did I enjoy the fitting process beyond my wildest expectations, I seem to have stirred that feeling among a lot of other team members and staff at TPI. If you go into the fitting with the idea that you have much to learn and more to gain from their experience, you'll have a remarkable fitting experience! Let me know how it goes for you? Are you getting the entire fitting process done? Good luck and enjoy the ride!

450.00 is better than I thought. I think it would awesome for my game as well to get  a full fitting to make sure I am using all the right equipment. I went to get fitted by a titliest rep for the 910 and found that I was using to light of shaft with too much torque and that was just during a 30 min fitting. 3 hours to fit all my clubs would be sweet. My wife and I are planning a road trip to visit her parents in Hampton, NH this summer, so I am going to look into going to the MA fitting facitily. The only thing I am afraid of is that I am going to get fitted and find out that I am playing all the wrong clubs and then I would want to buy all new ones, lol. Oh well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. If I happen to book a fitting during my tirp I will let everyone know how it goes. Have a great year!

BarryO:  yes, I'm going for the full fitting.  Leaving from Texas on Wed am.  Get in to San Diego late morning.  Gonna try to play Torrey Pines South Wed pm.....wish me luck!!!!

Then Thurs morning I'll go to the fitting.   My flight home leaves Thurs evening so it's gonna be a blur of a trip.  Can't wait!!!

One of the pros at my club is really excited for me.  He said to go in with no pre-concieved notions and just hit what they ask me to hit as well as I can.  Really good advice.

Look forward to seeing you out here.  The North course is also in good shape right now if you have trouble getting out on the South.  Make sure you bring some layers, the weather has been chilly here.

LSG, how did your fitting go in your world wind trip??? Who was your fitter?? What did you think and what did you learn? What kind of results did you acheive? I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as I did. My Pro back at the club I work at is a Team Titleist player, so he too was excited for me to get my fitting at the Oceanside Facility while I was out here! I am from south central New York State outside of Binghamton, NY. We are more than a month away from any golf back home! My children are all in the Marine Corp stationed at Camp Pendleton. My youngest daughter had another little girl at the end of November, so that's why I'm out here; helping her with her 16 month old daughter and the new born. I know for a fact that I'd get fitted all over again just for the experience. I'd like to think of myself as a student of the game. I read a lot of books and study a lot of video plus I got to help my Pro back home with fittings and lessons. I'm a 4 hdcp, what's yours? Where are you from?  I had the fortune of playing Torre North last year one week before the inaugural Farmer's. I played with my daughter's chaplin that day and we started real late in the afternoon so we never got to finish all eighteen. I went to the tournament this year with a pass from their next door neighbor who was a marshall on the eighteenth green. I got to see Bubba make his birdie on eighteen then Phil's try for an eagle as bones tended and pulled the pin. Eighteen inches away from a playoff, man he can hit those wedges. I've managed to play on the Marine Base course a few times and a resort course not too far from where my daughter's family live off base. It's good to swing the club, even though they are not the new set of Titleist equipment I plan to get soon! Good luck with all your new information!

BarryO:   I haven't made the trip yet.  I leave Wed morning 2/16 and the fitting is on Thur 2/17.  Gonna try to play Torrey on Wed afternoon.

I'm from Texas so I get to play all thru the winter.  I'll bet I've played 20 rounds since Thanksgiving.  That's why we call Texas God's country, we get to play all the time.  Of course we pay for it in July and Aug when the temps get to +-105F most every day!!!!

I carry an 8 that I want to lower to 5-6 this year.  With this fitting, I'm going to pull the trigger on a driver asap, then I'll probably buy an new set of irons later this year.  Right now I hit the 907 D2 9.5deg w/ a stiff Blue Byou shaft.  My irons are R7's TP model.  I like the AP2's so I hope my fitting points me in their direction.  (I need to keep an open mind and just hit what the fitter gives me though!!!)

Thank your kids for their service to our country!!!  Kids like yours are what will keep our great country going in the future.  My niece and her marine husband are at 29 Palms.  He made his first tour to Afganistan last summer and fall.  He goes back sometime this summer.

I'll post when I get back from the fitting.   One concern is the weather.  Looks like some rain will be in the area on Wed and Thurs.  I asked about being rained out and they said they have places to hit from that are sheltered.  Wish me luck!!

Barry O:  below is a report of my trip to San Diego for my fitting.  Hope all is good with you.  I'm hitting the driver and 3 wood extremely well.

I just got back from my fitting session at the TPI Oceanside facility just outside of San Diego.  Left Midland, Tx on Wed morning 2/16, landed in San Diego at about 10:30 am.  My fitting session wasn't until Thursday morning, so my plan was to see if I could get on Torrey South.   I made the drive North and checked in with the starter who told me a twosome was about to tee off in 10 minutes and it was pretty full the rest of the afternoon.   So I went for it and played that track with out any sort of warm up.  Needless to say, Torrey is everything I had heard and more.  Great golf course, and the Pacific is a great backdrop.  I shot 88 which is high for me (I'm an 8 hdcp).  We Texans aren't used to playing in the rain and it rained for most of the back nine.  I haven't had that many long iron second shots in to greens in a long time.  Nevertheless, it was a great experience and I would do it again in a second.  The price is a little steep, $228 with cart, but how many chances do you get to play a US Open course?

    Now for the fitting.....

I showed up at The TPI facility on Thursday at 8:30 am.  What some of the other posters have said about the security around the facility is true.  The perimeter fence is completely tarped, so you can not see in.   The gate guard was very friendly and informative.  I parked my rental and went inside.  It's pretty neat, because the facility looks like any office complex you would work in, but behind it is the most neatly manicured golf range you'll ever see.  They were filming a Golf Channel - Titleist Performance Institute fitness program in the studio so as I was checking in I tried to see what was going on with that.  They said the series would air on the Golf Channel some time after the Masters.

My fitter was Jim Watkins and he was excellent.  We went out to the range and I got to warm up for a couple of minutes while he set up the laptop computer and the Tour Tracker launch monitor.  Jim was very thorough.  We talked about my game and what I was looking for in getting fitted.  Once I was warmed up we started with the driver.   I hit my driver (Titleist 907 D2 9.5 with a stiff Blue Byou shaft) for 5 or 6 shots so he could get a baseline.  I forgot to mention, before I hit any of my clubs he put them on a machine to determine the exact loft and lie that I was playing with.  I hit both the 910 D2 and D3 in 9.5 and 10.5 lofts.  I probably hit a half dozen different shafts.   We zero'ed in on the 910 D2 9.5 with the Diamana Kai' Li 65 stiff shaft in the C2 setting.

We then jumped to fairway woods.  I really have been struggling with my 3 wood (Titleist 904F 15deg with stiff Aldila) for the last couple of years and I struggled with the shots I took  on the range.  Jim said that the new 910F was a lot easier to hit and he was right.  I hit that club in the neutral A1 setting and was striping it 220 to 230 yards down the middle.  Sold!!

We then moved to hybrids.  I hit a Nickent 17 deg hybrid that I struggle with.  In fact, I hit my 3 iron better than my hybrid, so I end up avoiding the hybrid.  I really didn't hit the new 910H any better than my club, so that result was not what I was looking for.

Jim made a real effort to keep me in a stock shaft in my woods, and it paid off.  I called my club pro this morning to see if he had the driver and 3 wood in stock and he did!!!!  So the clubs are in my bag ready to go tomorrow morning.  I'm really excited to play clubs that I know are fitted to me.

I also got fitted for irons.  I presently hit Taylor R7s tp with S300 shafts.  We tried out the AP2s and the CBs.  Jim really worked with the lie on both the demos that I hit.  I hit the 3, 5, and 8 iron in each of those models.  The Taylor R7 is a great iron, but I like the look and feel of the AP2.  They seem to have a thinner profile at address which I like.  I'm not going to pull the trigger on irons just yet (I've spent over $1000 bucks on the fitting, driver, and 3 wood) but I'll probably trade up late this year.

Finally, we went to the wedge area and worked on short game.  I carry a Vokey 52-8 and 56-10.  I like both clubs, but when I tried out the new TVD's that are made with bounce that makes it very easy to open and close the club face for different shots around the green, I was sold.  The TVD doesn't dig in to the turf like my 56 does, so it's a lot easier to hit a more aggressive shot that has good spin.  So I'm going to retire the 56 and buy one of the personalized TVD 58s on the Vokey web site.

All in all this was a great experience an I highly recommend it.  One caveat:  don't do this unless you are ready to buy some clubs because you will be so impressed with these new 910s and TVDs that you will want to trade up.  Jim took a full 3-1/2 hrs with me.  He was very patient and helpful.   He's a PGA pro, so I even got some helpful swing tips out of this fitting.

Sorry this was so long, but there was a lot to cover.

Hi Barry...Many thanks for your excellent review of the TPI Tour Fitting experience.  One more question, if that's okay...Can some or all of the $450 fitting fee be applied to the purchase of new Titleist clubs?...bill

Ryan,  Do you do the same service in Austin?  I'm sure we will be back down there for soccer next year.  Maybe I could schedule a session at that time.

TPI is my model!  The advantage we is that we have an actual course!

But seriously, yes we offer the same service.  We probably don't have a garage full of shafts, but we have many.  We also have a short course proving ground where we can take non-members to practice actual shots.

Would love to have you swing by!

    Thanks for the review,

Sounds like I need to get my trip booked!!!  I am left handed and don't see many demo clubs around Indiana so I look forward to an opportunity to play without wondering if I have the right equipment in my bag.  Thanks again.

Since my trip to TPI I am endlessly sold on the importance of getting fitted.  Every round I play, I can tell a story of how my 910 D3 outperforms other clubs.  And I give most of the credit to the tuning, not the club by itself.  Yesterday I was playing with an 18 yr old scratch golfer (I'm 54).  He has a better swing than I do, much more clubhead speed, and much more flexibility to execute the shot. But his driver spins too much, balloons up and lands soft.  I drove mostly even with him all day but outdrove him on some key holes and also won the match.

What does surprise me is how many other golfers at my club oooh and ahhh about my distance but don't run over to TPI and get fitted (it's only about 4 miles away).  They can see it's not my swing or my physical size.  Golf is just a bit of a funny game in that there are so many suggestions coming to players from all different directions, it is hard to figure out which to follow.

For those who do choose to get fit, I highly recommend TPI.  it is a golf adventure in itself and well worth the extra trouble if you can do it.  The fitters there are the best (they're the ones who fit the pros).  It is just a spectacular facility. The teeing areas may be the closest you ever get to Augusta and the Technology they have there is amazing.
