I am a 4 handicap and play the I-10 iron with a regular stock steel shaft.  I want to go to the AP2's but I am worried about what shaft to get.  I have always hit a lightweight shaft such as the TT Lite XL.  A few years back I ordered the Titleist 990's with a rifle shaft and hated them and sold them on e-bay for about 1/2 of what I paid for them.  I don't want that to happen again.  I have heard so many positives on the AP2's I'd really like to give them a go.  I have a 5 iron swing speed of 85MPH and hit my 7 iron 145 - 150.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks - Chip

    Hi Chip!

Have you given any considering to our network of Fitters you can find at Fittingworks.com?  I highly recommend anyone on the list near you.

We have had few players enjoy the Dynamic Gold Super light R300.  Very light and responsive.  The Nippon Shaft seems to work with our "Champions Tour" players if you know what I mean.  ;)  The older guys like the lighter/softer shafts.

    Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your reply.  There is an "Advanced Fitter" not too far from here (although I am not sure if they are open in the winter).  Is is normal (or Proper) to go to a fitter and then order the clubs thru the Pro at my home course?

Personally, I encourage players to support their own club.  We are advanced fitters as well and people come from all over.   We do charge a lesson/fitting fee at our place.

    Ryan,

I thought I would give you an update.  I went to an advanced fitter and he fit me with the KBS regular flex shaft.  Due to my launch angle we stiffened the loft 1 degree strong.  Unfortunately, I like the feel but I can't hit them anywhere.  I have lost 10 - 15 per club!  The shaft I was hitting with my I-10's was jsut the CS Lite but I could even hit my short irons high or low and had no problem stopping them.  These I tend to hit a little higher and I can't stop them like I could my I-10s.  Where do you think I went wrong?  I hate buying a $1000 set of irons and losing 50% on E-bay - again!

    Any suggestions?

Can you post your launch monitor data from the fitting? I would like to see the final numbers before making the call.

    Ryan,

He didn't give me any data.  He had me hit a number of different clubs and when we settled in on the AP2's we tried the different shafts and flexs that were available.  At the end he had me checking for lies which led to a 2 degree flat (I have always hit flat) and commented that with my 6 iron I was hitting it about 2 degrees higher than normal so we lowered the launch 1 degree to hopefully pick up a little distance.  I don't believe he actually recorded any data at all.  Much of the time I was hitting by myself just seeing what felt good.

I wish I could be of more help.  This is frustrating because I have always wanted to play the Titleist iron and this is now my second try with the top of the line club with no success.  I will say when I hit them good they feel great they just don't go anywhere.

Hmm, I wouldn't have sold anything to you without viable data on the performance benefits of each club.  There may be a loft difference with the I10s that I would have found in my Titleist loft/lie machine...I not familiar with Ping Specs.

For now, I would recommend a followup appointment with your fitter and find the data and go from there.  AP2s launch and spin more than comparable irons.  You may need another adjustment.

Chip - Just wondering how this ended up? I bought the AP2 irons and had a similar experience. I even posted the problem on this site! I was launching the ball so high and lost the same yardage you are losing now. I took the set  to an advanced fitting center and was fitted properly. The yardage returned and I can now control the knock down shot as well. I've played other irons in the past. The AP2's, when fitted properly, are the best set of irons I've purchased.

Being fit makes all the difference in the world.  I absolutely love my AP2's

    Aaron & Ryan,

I spoke to my Pro about this.  It just so happens that the Titliest fitting team will be at our club on Thursday of this week.  He set me up an appointment with them to go through a fitting with my new AP'2s and see if we can find the differences with them and my Pings.  I can say we had great weather over the weekend so I was able to varify it wasn't me losing distance over the winter because I was hitting the Pings the same as last year.  Also, a fiend in my group had the AP2's but he had the Project X shaft.  I did hit one with his clubs and crushed it - probably further than my Pings.  Maybe I just got a poor fitting when I was fit for the KBS shaft.  I'll keep you posted after my meeting on Thursday.

    Thaks for everyone's help.

Chip. I play of a 4 hcap and Play MP 63 irons with KBS Tour S flex. I have tried the AP 2's as I wanted a more forgiving club. I am 50 yrs old and have played blades/semi Blades for a long time. I found the AP 2 nice but lost distance and very high flight. we changed the lofts to 1 degree stronger with little positive results. I then tried the 710 CB's and they gave me the same perdormance as the MP63. as I had the MP63s it did not make sence to Change. However, if I buy new today I will buy the 710 CB. I play the 910 driver and FW 910 Fd and this is the best I have ever had. I gained some distance but for me the benifit is in consistancy and the ball flight. My view is that the AP2's are great but did not work for me. With a lighter shaft you will get an even higher ball flight. The project X might work but it is a heavy shaft. Best regards with the fitting.
