Why do I need to cut and bend my club? I play standard, meaning how if came from Golfsmith. My friends say NO and prostaff say "I should, to impove my overall game???" HELP!! Thanks.

1) a good club fitting professional will know more than your friends.
2)Less than 1% of golfers fit into standard / off the rack clubs -- a custom length will help your set up and on-center hits; a custom lie angle will help your direction
3) Not sure what you mean about Golfsmith, but if you got fitted and bought them there and they had them in stock then they probably just sold you something they already had instead of ordering what you fit into. Golf stores with big inventories are motivated to sell what is already in stock. Look at #2 above --less than 1% fits into standard specs. I have had 1 player in 20 years of fitting fit into standard specs -- that is 300 fits per year X 20 years -- 6,000 fits and only 1 !!!
4) Also - get fit outdoors - never into nets off of mats... need grass and ball flight to do it right!
I play standard and never been fitted. This is my 3rd year playing (Michigan) and currently at low 80s and I can't seem to get any better. Perhaps number bulletin 2 and 4 will shave off one or two strokes. Great information provided Steve. It makes me feel better to go ahead and get fitted. Thank you again.

Hi Sao -
I would hope that the only reason you are being told you need to have your clubs adjusted is because that is what a proper fitting revealed. There is nothing that says you cannot play all standard specs if that is what is optimal for your game. I think what you will find is that there may be some alterations from the standard specs that may be better suited for your game but the only way to determine what (if any) changes need to be made is to find a reputable fitting location and work with someone you trust.

My friends say that the toe of my clubs are a bit close or up.. i guess. Although my clubs are standard, maybe if I had them fitted for me, perhaps will help shave off one or two strokes. Thanks for your response, this site is definitely helping my decision whether or not to have my clubs fitted.
