I guess this is a question for the Titleist Folks. Are the new Pro V's more durable and why?
owen pmarblehead, MA
I definitely think they are more durable but I have no idea why. maybe the material of the cover has changed?

anyone else have the problem of scuffing the ball when you hit wedge shots

I have already gone through a dozen of new Pro Vx's in a couple of weeks because the cover's are not holding up to wedge shots.
They don't seem to be as durable, last year i could play one ball for a couple of rounds before using another one. The first day that I used the New ones it seemed like I had to change balls 4 times in one round?? Not happy with them at all they remind me of hitting the regular pro v's. I am a hugeTitleist fan but really considering looking at other options

Hi Michael,Thanks for the feedback, we really appreciate hearing input from our Team Titleist members. Here is a little more background and additional information on the Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls. The cover of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x features Urethane, a soft material that compresses against the club face on impact. Meanwhile, the NXT Tour features a Fusablend cover. Both of Urethane and Fusablend are materials that transmit a softer sensation to the hands and provide more spin than Surlyn-covered golf ball models. The Pro V1, Pro V1x, and NXT Tour are designed primarily to maximize spin and feel for higher overall performance. New irons and wedges will all have a tendency to shear the golf ball (for some people) because the grooves are new and sharper. The shear affect does vary from player to player and the characteristics of a player's swing in combination with the design of their higher lofted clubs can also have a major impact on abrasions due to iron shots (called "shear damage"). If you tend to be steeper on your attack, you may see more shearing then if you were more shallow.
Hi Mike,
I appreciate the info and I do tend to be a little steeper with the wedges and you make a valid point I have new Vokey wedges that I received for Christmas and just put them into play. Looks like you sold me again...
Thanks

ProV1X "shear damage" is causing me to look elsewhere. Last round I went through 4 balls. Two of them where done after one wedge shot. Others made it a few more holes. Used to be able to get 8 to 10 rounds out of a dozen. This with 10 year old blades and 18 month old Vokey's. Driver/Digger I guess is my style of attack. Oh and my 910D2 Kai'li that I picked up in January is deep, very deep. Thanks for that at least.

I think the cover is more durable. I also play conforming grooves. However, the ball seems to last longer and is longer off the tee.

I'll be honest and say that only ONE of the balls are more durable.
I'm a normal ProV1x player. I have for a quite sometime, other than when I switch out and try other stuff.
But if I'm playing a Titleist, it's a V1x!
Fast forward to this new cycle of balls. I bought both and played them side by side. Even swapping out and playing last years models against this years models. I didn't like last years ProV1.. but loved the 09'/10 ProV1x. Pretty durable, nice spin, nice feel off the driver and irons.
But this years ProV1x is nice too.. Love the slightly flatter, higher flight, better launch angle, and plenty of short game spin. However, it to me is NOT any more durable than the 09' ball. Infact I could tempt to say, it's less durable from what I found. It scuffs easy, but doesn't cut that easy, if that makes sense. The ball looks like hell after a while, and goes into the bag.
The New ProV1 however is wayyyy more durable than it's counterpart. More durable than any of the previous models in my opinion. I think it's because it's softer. I noticed that I do get a higher ball flight, but I'm getting just as much, if not slightly more distance with my driver, I'm still getting some nice spin numbers and plenty of roll too. I'm not ungrateful for the extra spin around the greens, too, so I like that as well. The ball is much softer, spins more, and launches slightly higher if you hit the ball high anyways. Because it's soft, I think it doesn't shear as bad against a short iron or wedge. I'm steep, and I really compress the ball. I think it gives a bit more in the grooves, and doesn't stick.

I found the latest Pro V1X to be a more durable cover. I was not a fan of last years model as I consistently scarred the cover with the first wedge shot hit during a round. It was a significant issue. I could not get 5-6 holes out of a brand new ball. There seems to be improvement with the new ball.

I am also loving the new pro v1x. it's definitely more durable!!
I personally preferred the feel of the old pro V1x but the new one is more durable! you can't beat that!

Big time. I've got fresh wedges and played the same Pro V through 9 without a scratch on it. It even took a lick from the cartpath without budging. They've definitely improved the durability without sacrificing performance. I really like the new Pro V. I'll be taking the 1x for a spin this weekend.
