909 or 910

    I've been playing golf for about 15 years now, but just recently took it up seriously. And when i say seriously i mean playing twice a week during the season instead of 4-7 times during the season. I'm still using a 975J driver, but have been told that it is very outdated and that I should get a new driver. I average about 270 with my current driver, but my accuracy is basically non-existent. 

    I've been using the 975J since it first came out (i got it as a gift) and love how Titleist drivers feel. I've gone to the local golf store and tried out many different kinds of driver and have came down to two choices. The 909 or the 910. 9.5* with a stiff shaft. Doesn't matter D2 or D3. Since i'm used to hitting a 300cc head driver both are a huge upgrade for me. I've hit about a large bucket worth of balls with the 909D2, 909D3, 910D2, and 910D3. The ball goes about the same distance for all four, but the 910 feels better and i feel the RIP shaft fits me quite well. 

    The dilemma is that the 909 is a little less than half the price of the 910. I was wondering if the 910 is justified for being twice the price of the 909 currently. If there isn't a huge difference should i just save my money and go with the 909 or just fork up the extra dough for the 910 b/c of its adjustable capabilities and better personal feel?

    Peter,

     The 910 had the adjustability that no other Titleist driver has had, specifically, so that wach player is precisely fit.  The driver has the ability fine tune the loft, which will help find the optimal launch angle and spin rate, as well as fine tune the lie angle to find the most consistent right to left or left to right ball flight.  My recommendation would be to get properly fit with a certified Titleist Fitter.

    It was the RIP shaft, feel and sound at impact that sold me on the 910. I would not have even considered the 909. Bought it, love it and never look back. It's hands down the best driver purchase I have ever made.

    You're 945J is the very club that made me fall in love with Titleist and have used every series of Titleist drivers ever since.

     

    Now to your question: I would caution against making a decision based on hitting range balls.  Personally, I've found significant differences in clubs hitting them on the range and playing with them out on the course.  I have used and loved both the 909 D2 and D3 until switching to the 910D3 a couple of weeks ago.  Others may disagree with me on this, but I find the difference between the 909 and 910 to be the adjustability of settings and the aesthetic looks.  It makes little sense in getting the 910 if you are going to use the standard A1 setting which is the same as the 909 unless you find one at a price you just can't pass up.

    As for wether to get a D2 or D3 that depends primarily on shot trajectory and how much spin your swing generates.  Being someone who puts a lot of spin on the ball, I found switching from the D2 to the D3 to be beneficial.
