i play to a 8 handicap. i play 990 DCI's S300 3-PW i look after these clubs like they are my kids and great shape. I have played them for about 8 years now. I like the way they play with my shots trajectory, feel etc. at what point do you switch just for quote on quote newer technoloy.......how can they justify every 2 years these clubs are so far advanced over the last model. i just don't see it. if you have irons that are from the 70's or 80's well thats a no brainer.....but now adays the technology is probably miniscule to justify that new set of a thousand dollars......

I am a 3 handicap and have had the same irons for five years - Titleist 775s with NSPro100s.  I know the distances and they perform very well for me. I am always looking but while the grooves are still good it has been hard for me to switch.  I am going to go through the fitting for the 712 AP1 and AP2 and we will see.  Anybody have any comparisons between the 775's and the 712 AP1's?

    Stuart,

The 712 AP1 aren't a blended set like the 775 CBs were.  The 712 AP1 will have a progressive blade length, but will play as a more forgiving iron through the set than the 775.  The top line in the 712 AP1 will be similar, as we have reshaped it to look thinner at address.  We do sell the irons individually, so if you wanted to make a blended set between the AP1 and AP2 or CB and MB, you certainly can.

If it ain't broke don't fix it! I know of people that keep the same clubs for 20 years or more (my dad has had the same woods for 20 years and carried a set of Apex irons for 25 and I had a set of X31 Staff irons I played with for 25 years). Players' irons haven't changed much (other than stronger lofts and larger heads) since the '70s. What is amazing is that some of the older players' irons hit the ball better than some of the new game improvement irons. I have a set of DCI 981 4-GW and one of Ping Eye 2 yellow dot 6-PW irons and I doubt that some of the new ones hit as well as either set (I am reshafting the Eye 2 irons to TT Lite XL - just awaiting the shafts). What's great about the DCIs is that I can hit a 4 and 5 iron reasonably well (and that is something I haven't done since 2006) but do have to admit that I am a bit spoiled with the 5H I carry.

    Mike,

Each iron model we come out with we figure new ways to improve MOI without decreased work ability.  This will help increase ball speed on your missed hits, allowing better results from shots not hit directly in the sweet spot, which can equate to any number of shots saved per round (depending upon the player).  We also use the feedback from players at all levels to design an iron that looks good and is appealing at address.  These changes can help players take their games to the next level.

    Hey Mike

Do you buy a new car every year? I'm sure there are people that do, but lets not worry about them.

Lets say you have more money than I do, and you buy a new car every 5 years, do you want everyone to think your new 2012 is a 2007?

Of course not, that's why every year they make a minor cosmetic change to the model car.

Some years they make a minor technology change, which leads to another and another......and so on until you can tell the difference in performance from a 2012 and a 2000.

Just like the automobile industry, just because they make a new model doesn't mean you have to buy it.

And also just like the automobile industry, the golf industry isn't expecting the 2010 buyers to buy 2012, they're looking more at the 2006 buyers to upgrade........but going from shiny chrome to brushed chrome might get a few 2010 buyers.

Also think about why someone would drive a 1966 Mustang vs a new car or play a '57 Fender Stratocaster vs a new one. Why does Keith Richards play the ugliest looking Telecasters? Why are Eye 2 irons (1983 vintage) such sought after clubs? They got character and there is a niche and comfort zone found. If I'm hitting great iron shots with a 2002 set of irons, why go out and spend $1000 and have to re-learn the clubs? I have my 981s zeroed in and developing a good pitch game with the P and W irons. I have a 2K7 Burner Draw driver and did a shootout with a brand new R11 at a demo day. Didn't see any appreciable difference in distance. I put my ball down the middle of the pipe with that so-called "old geezer" driver just about every time. I got a putter I bought used for $69 (White Hot 7H). $20 for a fitting and my putting has never been better AND I saved $130!
