I'm going to the Oceanside TPI for a fitting in November and I'm not sure which irons I should be leaning towards.  My current set are X Prototype's, which is obviously a muscle back iron, but after hearing how so many good golfers like the AP2's, I'm curious if I should be thinking about moving back to a non-blade style iron.  I'm a 2-3 handicap and like to shape shots, so I'm concerned about losing some of that ability with a cavity back style iron, but I wouldn't mind some better control and extra distance as well.

I'm sure I'll be able to try both out at the fitting and see which one produces the best numbers.  Any thoughts on the pro's / con's of both of those sets?

Hi Christian, I was fortunate enough to do a full fitting a few weeks back at the Oceanside TPI center - it was a 1st class experience. My advice after going through the fitting myself is to go in with an open mind. Similar to you, I am a low, single digit handicap that likes to shape the ball, however, after playing Mizuno blades for the last 10 years I went into the fitting wanting to gain some control and distance. I assumed this meant AP2 - if they were good enough for a number of the tour pros, they should be more than good enough for me. I tried hard to like the AP2s, but the turf interaction and overall fee for the CB/MB was more my preference. The surprising part was how much better I hit the CB/MB in terms of the numbers. We discussed a blended set, but in the end I went with the new 712 CB. Enjoy the experience - it is one I will never forget! A Canadian

I just got fitted yesterday at my club.  I was torn between the 712 CB's and the 712 AP2's.  The main difference between the two was the feel and ball flight.  The AP2's launched a bit higher than the CB's but the feel of them felt clunkier.  In terms of forgiveness there is not much difference between the two IMO.  In the end I went with the 712 CB's because the ball literally feels like butter off the face, and I love the simple classic satin finish look.

Seems a blast to go to Oceanside for club fitting. I will have a chance to go the West Coast for the Christmas Holidays later this year. Going there at the TPI facility is now becoming one of my agendas... I know its just near Valley Center/ San Diego and less than two hours from LA (w/ no traffic). But I would still be willing to make the trip to experience it. Right now here in WI its already getting to cold out to play golf, and even colder by the time the 712's come out.

Does anyone know how to make an appointment there? I do hope they are not backed up on appointments... If someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

    Hi Carlo Angelo,

You can give Andy Dobson a call at 888-262-7202 or 760-603-6117 to check availability and book an appointment at TPI. Keep us posted if you end up scheduling a fitting.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Hi Christian-  I just unwrapped my 710 AP2s, and I'm in love!.  I chose the AP2 over the CB because I was still able to put some shape to my ball, but the AP2 felt a tad bit more forgiving.  My logic is that when it counts, I'd rather sacrifice a bit of shape for a bit of control. (I'm a 6.8 handicap currently).  Enjoy your fitting!

    Hi Michael,

Congrats on the new clubs!  When I got my new irons (Nike forged) at the beginning of the season, I literally got goos bumps when I was opening the box up.  I can't wait to get fitted for a set of Titleist irons down the line.

Well, the AP2 turf interaction is significantly different from the MB. The AP2 stays in the ground for a long time, where as the MB cuts through the ground much faster. For the person that makes bigger divots will actually lose consistent ball speeds with the AP2 and lose distance in the air because of the high spin rate that the AP2 produces. The MB/CB are much better for people who like the low ball flight and take big divots, and the AP2 is for the player that makes shallow divots and likes the high ball flight. In my opinion, I think you should stick to the MB, but if you want forgiveness, you should either to a combo with short MB irons, and CB long irons, or a full set of CB irons.
  11. The shaft and ball you use will also change flight and spin.  AP2 712 gets through the turf well.  Head does have a higher launch angle than the CB or MB.  I did gain distance with the AP2 and the feel on well struck shot was pure.  I really like the head and think that Titleist did a great job.  I'm also I big miz iron fan too!  The MP 53 is a compatible club as well.  The mp 53 launches lower with more spin for me.  Mp53 launch was 17 degrees with 5500 spin 6 iron.  AP2 was 20 launch with 5000 spin.  Did hit the AP2 farther I guess do to higher launch less spin.  Don't know if it will hhold  the green.  Part of the problem with launch monitors is the balls they use are not pro v 1x, but a slightly harder less spin ball.
