I'm looking for a quick poll. How many of you keep all your old clubs after you replace them? Back in 1998, I bought a new set of 962 DCIs along with a couple of woods. I used them until this year when I bought a new set of 910s. The thing is that I kept my old irons (prior to the 962s) for many years thinking it would be good to have a spare. The same goes for the Burner Bubbles I had from way back. Did I ever use any of them? Not once! Now, I find myself thinking about keeping my 962s as a spare set, but then I remind myself that they will most likely just take up space.

How about it? How many Team Titleist members have an inventory of old clubs lying around? Those that do, how many actually use the old clubs?

I sold most of mine or traded some in (got a couple brand new Vokeys that way just about free). At this time I have almost enough for 2 sets (my playing set is Burner driver and fww, hybrid, Eye 2 irons, Vokey wedges, Ody putter; my reserve set includes Louisville Niblick persimmon 5W, 10W, 34H, TM Rescue Dual 3H, DCI 981 4-GW). You get a bit of a warm fuzzy with the sticks you use all the time. Then you try your old sticks and they just don't do it for you.

The hybrid is now a SQ 5/26 and it is a keeper. As for the reserve set.... still got the Niblicks (Louisville Golf is repairing the 5W free; the shaft came loose from the head and had a crack on the hosel) and the 34H, the DCIs are still there but added a Vokey 256-10 (bent to 57) to fill out the iron set.

Contemplating returning the SQ 5W to the store because my 975 woods are still there and may want to buy them back. I hit the Eye 2s much better than the 981s; however, the side benefit of the latter is they help with ball striking (you have to be spot on to hit correctly).

If you want to know a story about someone who had a lot of golf clubs (and most of them were Titleists).... I was stationed with a Senior Chief Gunner's Mate who had SEVEN sets of golf clubs in his tool shed. I had a set of Wilson X31 Staff irons that I played with from 1979-2003 that I ended up handing down to my son-in-law. My dad got them new in 1967 and handed them down to me.

Some of my freinds like to play golf but they don't own any clubs so, I kept my old clubs to lend them whenever they want to get out on the course with me.

    James B,

I thought the same thing, and I did give one old set away. Unfortunately for my friends and relatives, I'm 6'5" tall, and I have a driver swing speed of 115-120mph. My old clubs are 1.5" long with S400 shafts -- not so good for a beginner. It probably will hurt me on any sale as well.

That is now why I am keeping the 975s and 981s at home. Can't really sell them because people on Craig's list want them almost for free (never mind that they get re-sold for quite a bit more than the pga.com value at places like Golf Mart, Global Golf or e-Bay).

For the longest time I kept my old clubs, but after a while I realized I was probably never going to use them again and they were taking up too much space.  After that, I traded some of them in, which certainly helped to offset the cost of new clubs.  Lately, it seems like the trade-in value of clubs has really dropped off, so rather than trade them in, I give them to friends and family members who are in need of some up-graded clubs.

I've kept clubs for a long time and now they aren't worth anything so I'm going to give them to First Tee to use. I know they still have a lot of good shots left in them!

I have kept all my old Titleist clubs along with other wedges and putters. I have given my nephew a set of 962 irons and I have given some of my Titleist Drivers to some of my crew members that I work with. Still have most of my first set of Titleist irons and woods that I got in 1974. I don't use any of my old clubs anymore but they have alot of sentimental value to me.

i was in highschool when i started golf so i had the worst set of irons from walmart you could get i replaced them about 7 years ago with my current set DCI 990's i have them measured and fitted and dialed in. i would have to say some day when i do get a new set of sticks that i will keep these. i have gone through more woods though and have kept them

I keep two sets just in case something happens when I'm playing.  If you decide to sell your 962s it will not be for money, as you will most likely get less than 100 bucks for them.  So, if you lkike them, keep them.

I would def sell - you will never go back to an old set of irons.  Except in the case of special clubs - my previous set of irons are the 40th Anniversary Apex blades, only 1500 sets ever made, and modeled on the exact set that Mr. Hogan used himself.  Which is exactly why they are my previous irons - they are damn hard to hit.  The ball flight is beautiful, they feel sweet when you hit the sweet spot and looking down at them at address is a dream, but a less than perfect swing, less than perfect contact and you are not going to get good results.

I currently play forged split cavities - absolutely phenomenal irons - I would only think about changing these for a new set of 712s.

I ended up selling all my old woods. I was definitely never going to use them again, and no one else was going to either. I'm still torn on the DCIs. They are not really good as a backup anyway since my specs have changed quite a bit. Most likely, I will sell them off.

I have and use an old set of blades, a very old set of blades, and a set of 990B's(mainly use 990's).

When I have finished with a set of clubs, including woods, wedges, but not putters, I give them to the hs. I just gave 909D3, 904f 15*, 2 503.h's, 3-pw 962's, 2 KGZ wedges to the hs. The coach will find them a good kid.

Knowing that someone that can't afford to buy clubs will get them is worth more than what I can get by selling them.

Plus the coach will give you a receipt for the donation to take off your taxes......its not much

I always trade my old clubs in on the new stuff.

I sold my DCI 981s when I upgraded last year to the AP2 710. I will typically keep a driver as a back up. And I have most of my old putters, except the Cameron Futura, I sold that thing to friend. He had better luck with it than I did. I have a bag in the garage with some single clubs and putters in it, but mostly I trade or sell old sticks.

  17. It's a hard call on this subject. On one hand, holding on to old clubs is a bit like keeping an ex around...there's a reason they're an ex! You moved on to something you liked better, so why go back? This is even more so if your specs changed. On the other hand, having a spare set, JUST IN CASE something happens(Like a mishap with your 7-iron, which leaves you without one!) seems like a small blessing. I was gaming my 710 AP1s when said mishap occurred(BTW, Titleist, where is my 7-iron? It's been almost 6 weeks!). Instead of playing w/o a 7-iron, I was able to throw my full set of MX-300s back in the bag. I'm planning on trading both sets for 712 AP2s in a couple of months...when I get my 7-iron back! I'd still say get rid of them unless they're really valuable.

In Our Country we a wonderful Golf Development Program where we donate old clubs to the Development. I donated a set of Founders Club CB Tour Forged irons plus wedges and Driver, FWoods. This set was given to a boy 16 yrs old that could not afford clubs, he had a mixed set consisting of 7 clubs. two years later, he has just finished 1st in his age group national competition. he still use the clubs. he now plays of a +2 handicap. Srixon has now given him a brand new Bag of custom fitted clubs, this could be the next Schwartzel or Louis Oosthuizen or Ernie Els?? I know a $100 could buy a new wedge but it can also give a Child a future in Golf, and give you more satisfaction than the new wedge.

The clubs that I can't get a trade-in value at Golf Mart I donate to Good Will. Hand-me-downs are a great way for someone to start playing golf. I played with a starter set consisting of 3-4 woods, 3-5-7-9 irons, dual wedge and putter between 1972-1979. My dad handed his Wilson X 31 2-PW irons down to me in 1979 (he got some new Ben Hogan Apex) and I played with them until 2003 and then handed them to my son-in-law in 2007 (he can hit a stiff shaft). Still mulling whether to sell my DCI 981 irons or keep them. They and my Eye 2s hit about equal in distance but the latter are more accurate and consistent.
