Been looking for a slightly more forgiving 2 iron type club, been back and forth from 5 wood to hybrid over the last couple of years and love the 5 wood off the tee although it spins too much for me and goes to high into the wind and the hybrid is good off the ground but I shy away from it off the tee as I feel like I'm going to hook it even in the C1 setting. So I was thinking of going with a 2 iron but would like something a little more forgiving and my thought was the 712 AP2 3iron bent to 19* and 2 iron length. The only thing that concerns me is that it will have negative 2* bounce, not sure if that will be a problem or not. Also I'm basing my idea on that I feel this club should spin less than both my 5 wood and my hybrid. Anyone tried this? Does it dig too easily? Wish they would just make a 2 iron available for the retail market.
  2. I'm sure you have thought of this but surely you could forgo a bit of forgiveness and go CB 2 iron (or sign my petition for the 912i -similar to 503i)?

I have a new 712 CB 2 iron coming this week though, hopefully going to be my fw finder  :)

I currently have my 710 AP2 3 iron bent a little strong to fill the gap between my 5 iron and hybrid.  I currently play 4 wedges and tweaked the lofts of my 6, 5, 3 to create 15 yard gaps.  My three iron also has a 4 iron length shaft so it's not as awkward going from the 5.

Think the most important aspect is not necessarily getting a 2 iron, it's finding the right gap and spin/launch on a monitor.  I understand you fear the hook with the hybrid.  What's the shaft/setup currently?

    Matthew,

How did you get the Team Titleist Club Champion badge?  Just curious.

Ryan, I currently have a 910H 19* with a Matrix Ozik hM2 and it's set at C1. It's great off the fairway but for some reason I get the hard left off the tee sometimes and I shy away from it. I've been like that with every hybrid I've ever owned. I was hitting the AP2 3 iron at std loft with S300 the other day on a launch monitor and my spin rate was 5000+ and the MB 3 iron with same shaft was going roughly 10-12 yards further so I'm not sure the AP2 will even work for me. I have thought about just going with the CB 2 iron which is the likely choice but was hoping for something that I could use more like a driving iron and go after it sometimes and get it out there 250 off the tee if I needed too. I'm guessing the 2 iron would go 230-235 max. A 250 club would be great for tighter 400 yard holes to get it down to the 150 marker.

Indeed, the 5,000rpm spin rate is a smidge high! The AP2 is certainly more forgiving, you can definitely see how clubhead design affects performance. You are unique in your performance needs. For the hybrid, perhaps on the tee shots, you stand a little to far way in an effort to sweep and smoke it off the tee. That can dynamically move the lie a little more upright. Maybe you stand closer and cover the ball nicely from the fairway. One test would be to not use tees on holes you select hybrid to tee off and recreate that fairway shot. Let me know how it all turns out! RC
