I'm a scratch golfer who has been unable to afford a new set of irons until now and would like to know what model I should be purchase. The current old set I used last season where given to me (Titleist DCI Gold Triangle oversize+)to replace an even much older set (Hogan Apex II's) I had since 1979. I thought it was a step back from my forged Hogan blades but really enjoyed playing the DCI's and played very well with them in my bag. I've played well enough to play college golf against the likes of Lehman and bettered Mickelson in an event in Arizona back in 1997 - so I have a fairly complete game even today with little play. I have a swing speed from 100 to 105+ and very consistent in impact. Also, should I expect a decent difference in distance from the old set to the newest Titleist models? I currently hit a 5 iron with a smooth swing 175 yards with high tragetory - I've read and heard that irons are now being produced with lower degree lofts for the same iron number and 1" longer shafts in many cases then the older models - Is this true. If so It might explain why some of my buddies are now hitting their irons longer than when they had older vintage irons and how some of the Pro's are now hitting 9 irons nearly 200 years these days. I would love to be able to hit a 5 iron a couple of hundred yards and not have to hit the 3 iron - as long as it is easier to consisently. I have a much better swing and high speeds than my buds but they are hit one to two clubs less than I am - I've got an ego just like the rest of you and feel I should be aout performing them in distance with the equivalent club. I don't have the access to get fitted in this area so your input would be very beneficial Thanks for your input.
