  1. Hello,

Im changing my golf set up.

    Now:

    Driver

    3 Wood

    19* Hybrid

    4-9 CB

    Wedges: 46, 52, 56, 60

    Future:

    Driver

    3 Wood

    19* Hybrid

    3-9 CB

    Wedges: 47, 54, 60

    Is this a smart change?

    Thanks

    Christian

If you have a gap in yardage then it might be a smart change... but if not, id stick with 4 wedges because those are scoring clubs.  Also, you probably won't be hitting a 3 iron to often.

I have 45-51-55-58-62 (the 45 is an AP1 PW and the 51 and 55 are 50-08 and 54-11 bent 1* weak). I would say 99 percent of my wedge shots are with the 51 and 62. I use the 54 and 58 as sand wedges (a 58-04 SM3 plays like an old school sand wedge). My top end is 13* driver, 5/18 W, 4/21H, 5/26H, 7/34H, 7-9 AP1. I have 15 yards separation between clubs from the 5 wood thru 7 iron (the 7/34H gives distance halfway between the 7 and 8 irons and I use it primarily for plowing out of the rough, fairway bunkers and where I need to drop the ball on a dime around 140 yards; I've always carried some sort of an "approach" hybrid since 2006 and they come in rather handy). As you can see, my setup places more importance on the short game. I used to play 47-55-60-64 in 2009- early 2011 (the 47 and 55 were set wedges in a Snake Eyes Q3I iron set that I constructed; they didn't make a gap wedge). I got rather adept at working the PW between 60-100 yards (I would occasionally hit a full golf shot with the SW from 85 yards but not often). I've always carried some sort of an X wedge since 2006 (the SM3 62-07 is a compromise between a 60-07 and 64-07). 47-54-60 is a simple wedge setup and the distance gap is not insurmountable. There are some articles on Dave Pelz' website about distance control. When you take a full swing, you can shave 10 yards distance for every 1/2 inch you choke down; 5 yard per 1/2 inch on a half swing; 2.5 yards per 1/2 inch on a 1/4 swing (aka chip). Having a 19H and 3 iron may be a bit redundant because the gap MAY be between 5-10 yards. Better to fill the gap betweeen the 3W and 3 iron with a 17H or a 19FWW. A 5 wood generally gets 5-10 yards more vs a 3H.
