If you had to play a game with a miniumum set of clubs and still be able to play a decent round, what would your setup be?

    For me -

    13* Driver

    18* fww

    27* hybrid

    8 iron

    PW

    50-08, 54-14, 60-10 wedges

    Putter.

I find I use these pretty frequently, regardless of the golf course.

This could be anything. I used to play with a guy who would occasionally meet me for our usual morning round with nothing but a 7 iron. He would hit every shot with it, including putts. He would sometimes shoot in the 70s and often better than his scores with a full set of 14 clubs. He was really good with that 7 iron! Having only one club really makes you get creative.

For me, I would go for:

    17° hybrid
    5 iron
    8 iron
    PW
    Putter

Just keep the course under 6200 yards. Otherwise, I might want to add a driver.

It would depend on the course you are playing at

If I was going to carry a small bag:

    12 degree driver

21 degree FW (a 17 FW would be in addition to depending on the length of a dogleg I couldn't cut with driver)

24/27 degree H (and I could use one or the other depending on the par 3 distances)

    6/7/8/9 Iron

48/54/60 Wedges (although I have a hard enough time with the 58).

I don't hit driver far enough to go for a par 5 in 2, so accuracy is more important than distance.  The 17 FW can wander or not get enough loft off of the deck to consistently challenge the 21 FW.  I have one course with a par 5 that offers enough width to gamble off the deck with the 17.

I actually could substitute a 7/21 fairway for the 18 fww.  I also can choke down on a 7 wood to hit a 170 shot.

The clubs I listed are the ones I use on a regular basis regardless of golf course.  I also can work the 6H down to 8 iron distance.

I played one time with a 5W, 28-32-39H, PW SW LW and putter and shot 3 strokes over par.  Record par count (10 pars in 13 holes) was with driver-7W-10W-34H, 8-PW, 54, 60 and 64.

I have a post floating and part of it may be redundant but I played golf with 8 clubs for 5 years (1972 thru 1977 used 3-4 woods, 3-5-7-9 irons, Dual Wedge and a putter).   I could leave out the 50-08 or the 54-14 and make it 8 clubs but I have a bevy of shots I use - more likely to leave the former since a high bounce sand wedge is handy for fluffy bunkers; also, a GI PW works pretty well out of soft sand because of the wider sole.   I had a shootout at the driving range today with the 5-18 fww, a Supersteel 7W and persimmon 5/21 fww and found I could hit a choke down shot with the 5-18 the same distance and just as accurate as the other two fairways.  Plan is to take 4H and 6H out and do some target practice at the range.  I've found I can work the 6-27 down to 8 iron distance.

12 clubs is my normal full bag (and that includes the 4-21H, the persimmon 34H and the 9 iron).  I can carry the 7W and 7 iron to fill the bag up.

Also remember playing at Balboa Park Exec (it is a par 32 course with no par 5s, 3 "real" par 4s between 320 and 395, par 3s between 130 and 198 yards and two driveable "par 4s" that are just under 250 yds) with an old man who had a putter and 5 short irons in his bag.

It's different for every player. Go with what works best for you. I personally like 4 wedges.

For me, I guess it's hard to part with my irons, hybrids, and putter, so I'd have to say: 18* hybrid 4,6,8 iron Pitching wedge and lob wedge And my putter of course It's easy for me to take of 10 yards with each club and I hit my 18* 220 yards, so I guess I could play fairly decent because I have confidence in all those clubs and then some.

I've been finding that a 5W or 7W and a 27* hybrid have been a pretty effective combination for getting around the golf course since about 2009.   The distance is pretty predicatable with these and I can swing away.  I can also swing away with a 34H and have been using them (mainly as a backup to the 7 iron) since about 2006.  I can work the distance on these pretty well.

I've gotten to the point where I can now hit a 4H with some degree of regularity but the distance varies by 10 yards and sometimes there is no value added over carrying a 5H.

The 8 iron, PW and the remainder of the wedges are pretty predictable for distance.   I can hit the 6,7,and 9 reasonably well but, again, the distance varies by 10 yards.  I have been able to take the 8 and PW dead cold and hit an absolutely solid shot.
