  1. I recently (3 weeks ago) bought a 910 D2 driver.  The driver has a plastic covering on the face of the driver, the sides and underneath.  All one piece.  The Edwin Watts salesman offered to remove the covering but said in time it would likely wear off.  I chose to leave it alone.  Since then, I wonder if the face has a plastic/pvc covering, is the ball actually making contact with the metal portion of the driver.  I called titleist and got two differing opinions.  The strongest opinion was to leave this plastic coating in place as it is part of the driver.  All of this makes little sense to me as I have never seen a driver with a covering, especially on the face.  The plastic piece has an "edge" that seems it could be peeled away.  Having a viriety of opinions, I was wondering if anyone else with this driver has noticed the plastic coating and if they have removed it.

    Hi Michael,

The coating or covering you are refering to is the PVD finish and it should not be removed.

PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition.  The finish is a coating (not paint) applied via vacuum deposition.  Please note that the face of 910 metals feature a PVD finish over a scratch polish and the front of the sole features a PVD finish over a high buff polish, while the crown and parts of the rear area of the sole feature black paint.

How the PVD finish wears is influenced by the frequency and condition of use.  Normal use over time will eventually wear away the finish.  Hitting balls in sandy conditions or hitting range balls covered in debris will accelerate wear.  The wearing of the coating is normal and does not influence the product performance in any way.

To keep your 910 driver, fairway and hybrid in its best condition, please clean the face and sole with a non-abrasive, mild detergent and water.  Avoid thinners, acids, solvents, and other chemicals.  Submerging the head into water is also not recommended.
