I have a 910 10.5 w/ Bassara Stiff 50g shaft.  I was on a monitor and the fitter said I hit the ball high with a lot of spin and tended to pull it.  He was suggesting a heavier shaft.  What difference would I expect from a heavier shaft.  When I tried it my distance seemed fall off a bit.

Later in the session, he started suggesting a shorter shaft.  I am wondering what the effect of that would be as well?

    Steve,

Scoll to the top of your screen on Titleist.com, mouse over "golf clubs", and click on "Titleist custom club options".  On page four/five, there is a chart that should be helpful.

For the shorter shaft, this would give you more control while sacrificing some distance.

I play heavier stiff shafts in all of my Titleist metals.....my 910D3 9.5* (10.25) is a Diamana D+ 72g......my 913F 15* (14.25) is Diamana D+ White 82g....my 913H 17* is a Diamana S+ Blue 82g and 910H 19* Stiff Diamana Kai'li 80g (blue)....I even put extra weight in the 910s to get a little extra height......light shaft go left for me...when I do not try to overpower the club I hit it high and straight around 240-260.....and I am 68 years old, 6'3" and around 250lbs....10 hdcp...still playing my 910 driver until the 915 comes out later this year????  And I will go with a 72g shaft at that time also.....and I love the Diamana shafts......shorter would seem like better control of the club....if you are not pleased with this fitter get a second opinion......my setup works for me.....that is why I go to a trusted fitter......one opinion based on experience....cz :-)

    Steve,

Too light of shaft can cause a players tempo to get too quick and cause all kinds of flight problems, like a pull. A heavier shaft may help smooth smooth out your tempo and hit the ball better.

A shorter shaft doesn't necessarily mean that you will lose any distance like someone mentioned. A shorter shaft was probably suggested to help you with more consistent contact with the sweet spot which will lead to more distance and more consistent drives.

Being fit for clubs is a process. You need to trust that process and your fitter. If you don't, find a fitter that you can trust. And always ask your fitter the kinds of questions you are asking here. Why do I need a heavier/shorter shaft? What will this do? How will I benefit from this. If you don't understand something ASK! It's your money! Your fitter should be more than happy to answer your questions.

  6. Your club swingweight may go up and your overall swingspeed will slow down creating a more positive tempo.  Heavier shafts have lots of benefits for players that can handle the extra weight whom are currently in lighter shafts...have fun and good luck!

Yeah, what he said.  Shorter shafts can lead to more distance if it suits your game.  Longer shafts means more potential clubhead speed.  But if more clubhead speed means you will miss the sweet spot, you're not doing yourself any good at all!

Yes a heavier shaft will cause you to loose alittle swing speed. you can get that back over time and getting used to the shaft. the added weight might help you with control to cut down on the pull. i think when you eliminate the pull your spin rate will come down. but its deffinetly a trial and error thing. this is why you should see a good fitter and have them toss a few shafts in the club for you to try out. you might find a 64ish gram shaft might work better for you add a little control and when you adjust to it you could regain that distance. Same goes for shortening the shaft. you will probably lose distance to gain control that was probably the idea behind it.

    Cheers greens and fairways simba
