I was fitted for and have been playing DCI 962 Irons since 1996.  I've tried other titleist irons and other manufacuteres to improve my game, but I have seen no benefits.  I'm a 2-5 handicap.  Tell me the benefit and values of switching to a new set of Titleist irons?

Seb, I too played with antiques forever....LOL. Hard to switch as I am around scratch and feared a major step backwards in the beginning. I was fit comparing the MB's, CB's, and AP2's. I'll say this, they were all fantastic. I chose the AP2's based on spin and launch. Then again, it's your preference that counts. I'm a Titleist loyalist, and I did try others, with no buying intent. Wouldn't have mattered!.....

Yeah the best way to answer your question is to hit them in the same session and see the ball flight. The launch condition data from a Trackman (and the location of contact on the clubface) should be able to tell you a story. I would bet that the newer irons feel better and are more forgiving on off center hits. But you should try it then let us know how it goes.

(A mod should probably move this from the ball section over to the clubs sections)

Anyway, any club adjusted to fit you will be fine unless you start changing something in your swing

The 962's have a bias towards the heal side of the face to compensate for a natural mishit by "better" players that have swing from the inside. So switching to a more modern club with a more centered CG may cause you to have less of a draw on your shots.

Switching to a new forged blade will change the feel at impact, usually softer. Not necessarily a benefit if you prefer full feedback on your shots.

One of the biggest changes to modern clubs though is a blunted leading edge to improve turf interactions and help the club glide through he ground. Not an expert in the physics, but I am guessing that you can maintain a bit more ball speed should you hit it slightly fat. Also, you can probably prevent more damage to your wrists with less resistance when taking those deep divots. But if you are good enough to pick 'em clean all the time, it might not be necessary for you.

On a final note I think the 714 forged line looks pretty damn sexy, and you can't dismiss looks. After all Seb, your avatar is a pic of a gentleman in a rather dapper suite.
