Mixing 716 T-MBs and MBs

In late October I was fitted for the new 716s.  Optimal set makeup is T-MB in 3-5 and MB in 6-PW.

Because the T-MBs are a degree stronger than the MBs, this leaves a 5- degree gap between the 5 and 6 irons (instead of the more typical 4-degree interval).

My fitter recommended ordering the MBs one degree strong to avoid the gap, but this would make the pitching wedge a 46 degree clubhead.

I rely on a fairly precise wedge game and carry a 52 and 56 (both Vokeys, of course).  Bending the MBs means a gap in the wedges that I'll need to fix.

I'm considering leaving the MBs at standard, since a slight gap between the 5 and 6 iron and and equal 5-degree gap between the PW and 52 degree wedge would have less impact on the short game than a 6-degree gap between PW and 52.

Does anyone have suggestions?  Hoping a Concierge can chime in if possible.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Wade,

Interesting question. I hear you about your wedges and that you are already comfortable with those and it's odd that your fitter didn't suggest another alternative (in my opinion) and just make the T-MBs 1* weaker? Why don't you just have the T-MB's adjusted to be the same lofts as the  3-5 MBs? So the new lofts of the T-MBs would be 21*, 24* and 27*? This would help with the 5* of gapping and staying with the typical 4*.

What are your thoughts on that? You would still have your combo set, the forgiveness of the T-MBs and then have the same lofts with the typical 4* gap.

Let us know what you end up doing.

Even if the T-MBs and the MBs were all the same loft, the transition to the 5 T-MB will be different than using a 5 MB. In the end, it isn't the loft that matters but the distance gap. I went back to my fitter and we worked solely on distances. I had too much gap between a Vokey wedge and 9I and not enough between 21/24/27 hybrids. Now my lofts are not standard, but my distances are more consistent between clubs. You may have a similar issue now with your 52 and a 15-20 yard gap to the PW.

    Excellent points, guys!

My fitting suggested that the MBs bent one degree strong would even gaps, not just lofts, through the set.

Right now, I'm headed towards bending the 52 a degree strong, which will make a 5-degree gap between the PW and gap and between the gap and SW.  As my fitter pointed out, I'm already used to making adjustments on swings in the short irons but the longer clubs are typically played with a fuller shot.

Of course, going 46 (PW), 50, 54, 58 is always a possibility, but I don't know what club I would drop elsewhere in the bag.

    Would love additional feedback/ideas.

In any event, this is certainly a nice problem to have.

    Wade,

What is your bag set-up? It sounds like you have 3-PW (46*), and three additional wedges; gap, sand and lob. This will be 11-clubs so far, so add a putter, 12 clubs and then a driver and fairway wood, which is 14-clubs.  Did you carry two fairway woods or......?
