I am playing ap2 714's with pxi 5.5 shafts, I special ordered these clubs from titleist so the shafts are factory installed, btw I love them, they fit me to a tee, no pun intended. I was recently playing indoor golf with a friend who just received his new cally cf 16's, he ordered them with the same shaft I'm playing, pxi 5.5, his seem to be playing much softer then mine are, we compared the graphics on the shaft between the titleist and cally, they don't line up, the graphics on the Callys are one inch further up the shaft ( softer ). All eight Irons are one inch softer, the hosels on the cally and titleist are identical where the ferrule meets the shaft so if the shafts were installed as the shaft manufacturer recommends the graphics should line up.

My question is does titleist hard step there iron shafts when installing them or do they install them as the shaft manufacturer suggests. We are assuming that cally is soft stepping them but he didn't order them soft stepped and I didn't order my titleist hard stepped. My friend with the Callys wanted his clubs to be the same flex or FCM' s as mine but they appear to be a bit weaker. Help We are confused, thanks.

As far as I know, NO manufacturer will hard or soft step them unless they are asked to.

Interesting component forensic type of question. No way the Titleists are hard stepped and I doubt the Apex irons are anything out of the ordinary. The PXi shafts are only available in taper tip so that is consistent. It could have something to do with the weights of the heads and how cally has decided to do their installation. You can pull a grip off each 4 iron and see which length shaft was used as indicated by the factory silkscreen. If they differ by an inch, there you go. Cathi may help on the Team Titleist end but you'll have to speak to a cally tech in assembly/repair to compare. Make a few phone calls and hope you get the right person. Best of luck.

Hi Craig, If you would like to call us with your serial number, we can certainly take a look at any specifics in your iron build, but, we don't hard step any shaft unless it is requested.

One other thought. Manufacturers place huge orders for shafts and can have them made .370 parallel even when they are not available to the general public. If the Apexes are parallel bores, the graphics on them when assembly is complete may not match the tapers Titleist uses.
