AP2 vs. CB irons..........

  1. I'm sure this topic may have been covered before, but with new versions of each coming out I wanted to hear some thoughts.

I'm a 45 year former golf professional that has been using the 710 version AP2's for a handful of years now and I'm thinking of making the switch. The shafts in my AP2's are TT X100 and they maybe a little too much for me, so that is prompting a possible switch.

Anyway, doing a little research I see even most of the PGA Tour players seem to be favoring the AP2 irons which has me guessing if I even should be considering the slightly less forgiving CB's. I do like the lesser amount of offset that they have, but wonder about the forgiveness.

    Thoughts????

    DMCGowen,

I recently was fitted and ordered irons about 3 weeks. I went with a combo set. 716 T-MB in 3 and 4 irons, 716 AP2's in 5 and 6 irons and 716 CB's in 7-PW. They came in last week. Since the weather in the northeast has been fairly warm this winter I was able to hit them outside this past Friday and Saturday. All the clubs are amazing! Especially the CB's! They are forgiving on mishits and look amazing in the bag and at address... I was fitted for the KBS Tour Shaft X flex, +1 and 2* upright. Also I had the CB's bent 1* strong. Hope this helps.

I recently picked up a set of the CB 716's and love them. My initial thoughts were to try and get a set of the 714 AP2's but they did not have them at the demo day. As a baseline, my old clubs were TM LCG's and I actually really liked hitting them with the S90 rifle shafts but just felt that after 15 years it was time for an upgrade. So I hit the AP1's and AP2's (all TT DG S300 NON-AMT SHAFTS) in hopes that I would notice a significant difference. First off, at address the view of both of the heads were visually unappealing to me as I was used to a thinner topline. The AP1's did not feel good at all to me and I did not notice a significant uptick in accuracy or distance. AP2 felt a little better, but again no real difference over my TM's. The rep really noticed that I wasn't "feeling" either club and then handed me a 716 CB 6i to swing. I immediately fell in love with the looks of the CB's and was anxious to swing away.

These clubs have a TON of feel and feedback. I noticed immediately that they were more workable and very forgiving considering the blade-like design. I wont sit here and tell you that mishits don't punish you, but they don't punish you as much as you think they should. It is also well known that these clubs are slightly shorter than either the AP1's or 2's, but to me they are much more consistent and controllable. Sweet spot hits are rewarding as the sound and feel are like no other club I have hit.

Lastly, I will say that one of the main reasons I went with the CB's is that you know when you make a bad swing and why you made it. The feedback is THAT good in these clubs and it has helped me correct my errors and play better with every swing. In my mind, that should be every golfer's goal: playing better.

    Hope this helps.

I loved the CB's when I tried them. Just switched from the MB's to the 714 AP2's. For me, I hit the CB's VERY high, with too much spin. I settled on the AP2's because I was a full club longer with them. They're all good!!.....

    Grindelwald,

I'm playing the 714CB and forgiveness is not a big issue! If you don't hit it right in the sweet spot you lose some distance, but the feel pays out!
  6. Thank you all for your feedback! It has made things clearer and confusing all at the same time, if you know what i mean. I really dont want to give up any distance in my irons so that is something to consider. I guess its possible to order them all 1 degree stronger. Anyway, still a lot to consider, but the fitting process will reveal the answer im sure.

    Thanks again!

I read somewhere that 714CBs are as forgiving as 712AP2s and 716CBs are as forgiving as 714AP2s.

I have tried the AP2s but could not find the 'feel'. CBs, on the other hand, feel good.

Although the CBs look similar at address, I could feel a noticeable difference when taking shots with the 5 iron of 712CB, 714CB and 716CB. The 5 iron of 716CB is the most stable, followed by that of 714CB and 712CB respectively.

I owned brand new 712CBs for about 2 months before selling them for 716CBs. The switch was worth it albeit costly. I am more confident taking shots with 716CBs.
