Titleist AP2 712 Maintenance Questions

  1. I recently purchased a used set of Titleist AP2 712 irons. They are in great shape with the exception of a small sole mark on the 6-iron, a very small dent on the face (between 2 grooves) of the 4-iron (looks like a bag chatter mark), and some minor dents on several of the clubs. I'm aware this is normal/expected on forged irons. That being said, and coming from old cally stainless steel (X-14 Pro Series), how long should the grooves last before needing re-conditioning and will I be able to use one of the hand held groove sharpening tools? I took care of the Callys and, being stainless, I never had any rust issues over the obviously many years I played them. The AP2's are my first forged set and I just want to make sure I properly take care of them. The only specs I found is that they are carbon steel and I'm guessing have been plated...they are shiny. Does that mean I can't use a groove tool in the future or they will rust? Also, is there a recommended metal polish to use to keep them looking their best (aside from the normal wear from swinging and hitting golf balls)?

  2. Also, for what it's worth, my AP2s now get iron head covers to hopefully reduce the nicks and dents...especially to the faces.

I also have those and they present no issues. Soap and water to clean them up. I really like those clubs and I'm sure you'll enjoy many rounds with them.

I usually wash and dry my clubs after each use, using a plastic dish-washing up brush to clean the grooves, if you're not going to play with them for a while a squirt of WD40 will prevent rust, no requirement for polish to keep them shiney, if you're worried about bag clatter invest in head covers, but as this normally doesn't effect the performance of the club, avoid using a groove tool played forged clubs for years and never had the requirement, over a long period of time you may notice the grooves narrowing over the sweet spot, I've always used this as an indicator to buy a new set

I don't advise using any groove sharpening tool to bring the grooves back to life. For me, the best tool to keep my clubs looking good and to get rid of bag chatter is an extra towel that weaves in between the clubs while in the bag.
  6. I have had the last 4 generations of AP2's and the grooves have never even been a consideration even with lots of play over a few years with each model. I would agree however that wedges need more frequent updating though...

I do not have a recommendation for a metal polish since I prefer a more worn look.

    IMHO
