  1. Just looking for wee bit of advice. I am on the verge of buying a new set of AP1 716 irons. My initial though was to buy 4 - PW but I see the wedge is strong at 43 degrees. I was just wondering what people thought about the wedge set up from there or should I go for the W1 as well.

My short game is a weak area and I currently have png i25 wedge and 52 and 56 degree Clevelands.

    Many thanks for any advice.

    Cheers

    Jim

I would go get fit from a certified TItleist Professional and try the W1 (which by degree would be your PW) and try some Vokey's. See how you hit them and what feels good to you. I'd sign up for a Titleist Thursday in your area.

    Hey Jim,

You're going to love your new AP1s. I have the 716 AP1s 4I t W. My fitter set me up also with a Vokey 50, 54 bent ro 55, and a 60 deg. After using this setup for about 3 months it was apparent my gapping what not correct. I got rid of the Vokey 50 and 55. The ideal setup is the 716 AP1 W with my old SM4 52, 56 and my new SM6 60. The W wedge is equivalent to most other clubs PW. I suggest you get the W wedge (which is equivalent to a 9 iron) and also keep your i52, 56, and 60 Cleveland wedges. This is a good setup distance wise. I think you will be happy with this setup.

    Best Wishes,

    DV

You are in the right track and you've got a good suggestion there to get fitted for the 716 AP1. Furthermore, to answer some of your questions, here's a real cool video with true to the fact information about the 5th generation of AP1 (SIGOLF)... You'll love it.

Jim - the short answer is what Darron said; go get fitted. I highly recommend you check for when Titleist Thursdays start (restart) in your area.

All other advice is just speculation.
By the way, I am very happy with my 716 AP1s (not happy with my swing as of late, but am working on it!).

    I went to a fitter as I always do. My set up is 915D2 10.25*, 913f 14.25*, 915h 17.25*, 816h 21.00*, then 716AP1 XP 105 S300 +1/2, -2*, 5-W, Sm6 50.08, 56.14. I also have a Sm5 wedge 54.08 that I carry on occasions if the traps happen to be on the hard side. Out goes the 56.14.

I sold my 714 AP2s this spring which I liked (but due to a bad fitting and I did not play well with them and you can only correct the heads so much) and bought the 716 AP1s. At 70 I just need more forgiveness and more distance.
  7. Thanks for the advice guys it's very much appreciated. Going to get fitted next week for my irons and going to bite the bullet and get some wedges too. I was just a bit concerned about the gapping between the set wedges and specialist wedges. It looked like I was going to end up with a five wedge set up!!

    Cheers

Nice! Go into the fitting with an open mind, swing within yourself and ask questions as you should know what feels good to you. I hope it's by a Certified Titleist Fitter or at a Titleist Thursdays!

Depending on your distances you may or may not need to bend any of the clubs when ordered.

    I use the AP1's 4-PW the other 2 wedges are Vokey's.

    I had the same concern. I use the 716 AP1 4-W and a 52 & 58 degree Vokey.
  11. Thanks for that Pete, how do you find the yardage gaps? I've never been a fan of lob wedges, so was going to stick to a 52/56 combo.

    Cheers

  12. That's it done, AP1 irons 4 - W1 and then SM6 wedges 50, 54 and 58. Great fitting experience for both the irons and the wedges. Wedgetastic, but think it'll be good for me as 100 yards in has always been my weakness. Fingers crossed!!
