  1. Hi my handicap is 28 but I play a lot better. My iron ball striking is the beast part of my game.I have a 18 hybrid and I am wondering should I get a 716 tmb 2 iron because I don't like 3 woods.Would I be able to hit the 2 iron?

    Hey SKenny,

Hope this finds you well after the holidays. This is a great question, and one I get asked often out here in Oceanside. Whether it is a 5 iron, 4, 3, 2 iron, hybrid, fairway metal, the question is always the same, which should I play?

To answer your question in short; my gut, and assumption from my experience is: No, it will not be a good club to replace a 3 wood.

When we work with a player the goal is to analyze the needs of the player and how it relates to ball speed. In an ideal world we would like the ball speed with each club to separate by about 5-7 mph. When we have two or more clubs that play at the same ball speed, they will go the same distance, just at a different height.

When we can no longer create more ball speed off the face with an iron, we have to add size to the chassis which would be a Hybrid. When this club becomes deficient, you would go to a fairway, etc.

Basically, the 2 Iron has potential to replace a Hybrid in the bag, given you have the speed to keep the ball in the air. But because the chassis size of the fairway is larger, the speed will be faster off the face with all things similar.

I hope this helps, and feel free to ask any follow up questions about this topic!

  3. Thank you very much. You are very helpful.Would you recommend the 2 iron for me as a replacement for the hybrid?Would I be able to get it up in the air?Would I be able to hit it out the middle consistently?
    Thanks again

Lucas, thanks for that insight!!! I have been toying with replacing my 2 iron with a hybrid. So based on the chassis , the 816 H1 17deg would fly further than the 716 T-MB 2i (17 deg)?? How about control? I use my 2 iron off the tee as opposed to hitting from the fairway the majority of the time it is used.

I'd probably stay away from the 2 iron. It's only 1 degree stonger than your hybrid, so not really an efficent use of a club in the overall set. I used to have trouble with my 3 wood as well until I found the right shaft for me. Now my 15 degree 915F is one of my best in the bag.

Have you considered taking a series of lessons with a certified PGA teaching pro? Good instruction will always give greater results than putting a new club in your bag period. As a 28 handicap index, you have a lot to learn about the game before your start thinking about optimizing the performance of your equipment to your swing. It's the indian...not the arrow.
