Changing What's In The Bag For First Time In Ages

  1. Looking for advice (I'm sure it's been asked many times before)... moving from png G30 irons 4 (21*) - GW to 716 AP2's 4 (24*) - PW. The change in lofts has left me in a quandary. I have 915 D2 10.5*, 915F 15* & 915H 18* at the long end, leaving a gap to the 4i; I now also have a gap between 46* PW and SM5 54* & 58* at the short end.

Do I put a 50* gap wedge in, or re-jig the long end?

I do miss a 5W and am erratic with hybrids, but also favoured the gap wedge in the setup. With the lofting in the Pings I was covered evenly through the bag, but compromised by big clunky feel. AP2s really work for me ATM.

I would have to buy an AP2/SM5 50* wedge to complement either the AP2s or Vokeys, but that's no problem. I also have alternative clubs to augment the Titleist set from a rough half set made up of spare clubs I don't want to part with, as follows, so they're available too:

png G10 14* 3W Wilson FyBrid 18* 5W Wilson FyBrid 19.5* Fway/Hybrid Wilson FyBrid 24* Hybrid Titleist Vokey Oilcan/Copper finish 50* wedge - useable but hard, not soft, feeling as SM5s

I also kept the png G30 4-iron (21*) as it works better generally then any hybrid I've hit recently.

Opinions? Thoughts? Advice? Just to reiterate: I have a big gap either end of bag but only have room for x1 extra club (not x2, which would solve everything)...

I would recommend putting the 50 degree wedge in the bag with the 54 and 58 already in there.

If you're erratic with the with hybrids I would put a high lofted 5w back in your bag to give you relief. Alitmately you will have to practice your hybrid game as they're a very important part of your game and removing them completely will leave you too large a gap between 5w and irons!

I had the same problem. It took me some tinkering and a little time but I went 5 wood turned down to 17.25, a 712U 3 iron turned down to 20 degrees, 4-9, Vokey 46, 50, 54, 58.
In your situation where you have to pick one end of the bag or the other the obvious answer should be the short end. You're going to hit more shots closer to the green. How many 200 yard + iron/hybrid shots do you hit a round vs wedges into greens.
Hope everything works out for you. Good luck.
  4. Thanks for the replies so far guys, definitely food for thought. The more I think on it the 50 is a must, but I hit a 7 iron usually about 140-145yds (135 when I duff it, 155 when pure) and find distances bunch up a little at the bottom of the bag. I'm 165cm tall and until recently regularly out-drove my regular playing partner who is 198cm (his short game is amazing though). I definitely do miss a 5W though.

I agree that you should add the 50* Gap wedge in as you definitely want to fill the gap in the lower end of your bag. I think a good solution in the top end would be to add the 1.5* to the hybrid so it plays at 19.5. That would give you about a 5* gap between clubs at the top end, which is pretty good and shouldn't leave you feeling like you're missing anything. Just my .02, hope it helps.

I carry the 4-PW w/ 52-56-60 set up. It is much more important to me to make sure the scoring clubs are dialed in, with the longer clubs I'm just trying to get it somewhere on the green, with my shorter clubs i'm trying to stick it close.
  7. I have the same problem. I have around a 30 yard gap at the top and bottom of my set. I personally think it would depend on the distance you're looking for the 50 to fill. For me, I have a 54 and 60 which leaves me hitting 3/4 shots. Lots of range time later I am able to fill those areas so I can keep my hybrid. Like the guys above I would say choose an end and practice the other shots to cure the problem.
