I'm looking to upgrade from my G30s to something that can take my game further. I currently am very consistent in the 90s and moving into the low 80s at times. I hit my 7 iron 150 yards. What would you guys recommend. I'm also looking for shaft ideas (I plan to get custom got though). I play a graphite senior flex right now. I am curious about steel shafts. Thanks much. Megan.

Hi Megan from what you have described in your post I believe the Titleist AP1's would be fantastic for you, but as always i would go get fit by a proper club fitter and as far as the shaft goes that would depend on your swing speed and the club fitter could help you with that as well,

    Good Luck

Find a certified PGA fitter that is not affiliated with one of the big box stores if possible. Be prepared to pay a small sum of money for the fitters time who usually will not be pushing any certain brand of club. He or she should use some type of doplar radar machine like Trackman or Scopeflight that will generate data on your swing. A bonus would be if you could also hit clubs that you like on an outdoor range. The fitter should also use your current set of clubs to set a baseline when you try different brands and shafts. 95% of golfers are playing clubs and shafts that are not letting them play their best. Go get fit !

Hi Megan ... I would support the idea of you trying the AP2's. You have the ability to hit your 7-iron approximately 150 yards. That's pretty good indication of your ball striking abilities (assuming the lofts are comparable). You also have a good indication of what kind of performance that you are looking for and I am sensing that you would like to step up in performance.

All of that being said, the AP2's can offer you a new dimension on your game. They are a "multi-material" forged club with good feel and feedback.

As the others have indicated, find yourself a good fitter, try the different clubs (ie: AP1, AP2, and your base G30's) and try them with some different shafts. You seem to generate lots of swing speed in order to hit your 7-iron 150 yards, so there should be lots of steel shafts to match your swing.

It all comes down to feel and then, afterwards, practice ... get acquainted with your new clubs ...and you will like them even more! :-). Hope that you share with us your "journey" in buying news club Megan!
  7. Hi Megan...I'm consistently in the 80s but still prone to a round in the 90s on a bad day. I've found my AP2s (716) a real asset to my game. I went from swoosh Covert Forged irons as a point of reference. Forgiveness with great feedback has really improved my swing and ball striking...IMO Josh is right!
  8. I made the transition from AP1s to AP2s after about a year of consistent practice. The AP1s are great irons, and like the G30s help with distance and added forgiveness.....but the look of the smaller heads of the AP2s, and the softer forged feel were worth it to make the transition for me. If you can strike the ball well, Megan, the transition to AP2s is very achievable. The biggest difference is that AP2s have more of a players lofts, which can be 2-4 degrees higher lofted than a game improvement iron....meaning higher shots, and less distance for the same swing. Many graphite shafts also promote higher shots.....so it is important to get fit. When I got fit, they recommended a 1 degree stronger (lower) loft on the AP2s, and a more stiff graphite shaft, to lower the ball flight and get more distance. Hope this helps......

Getting fit, preferably at an Advanced Fitting Center would be my first priority. I hate to say this, but you don't want someone that starts by walking you over to the sets in colors that match the bag, and are generally pastels. An AFC will match your game to a shaft with maximal response. The KK A-flex is 65 g and the lighter metal shafts are 95-100 g. There are high-launching metal shafts. It's all about how you like the feel and how it responds. The AP2 choice depends on how well you ball-strike. On center hits with the AP2 are wonderful. In my case, I must have congenital predisposition to chicken wing, resulting in strikes out towards the toe. You may lose some distance with the AP2 over the AP1. In the 90's, we don't know how often you 3-putt or can only reach greens in GIR+1. The more you can tell the fitter about your game will help you find the right, nay, perfect combination.

    Hi Megan,

You mentioned (and others also) the most important thing, get fitted. It will give you the chance to try out all of the Titleist clubs and also see what is best for you.

I would think that the AP1s are very similar to the G30s that you currently play. It depends on how much you want to practice and improve, but I think the AP2s would be a great fit. As they are a bit smaller then the AP1s, but still offer a lot of forgiveness.

Have you considered a combo set of AP2s and AP1s (maybe in the longer irons)?

Hi Megan. First find a good fitter. Determine what fits your eye and you are comfortable with in your hands and gives you appropriate feedback at impact. Discuss this with your Pro or fitter as well as your strengths and areas for improvement AND your expectations from your next set of irons. Obviously those of us on this site have strong Titleist opinions (for good reason which you will come to appreciate should you end up with Titleist irons), but your swing, feedback from the clubs you choose, ball flight and your fitter should ultimately determine what you should be playing. Graphite shafts have come a long way from the early days but you may find you get better feedback from the clubhead with steel. That may help you "further" your game, but keep an open mind. Good hunting!
