Trying To Pick A 909 Driver

I got rained on yesterday and while drying off my clubs, I noticed what the golf shop has confirmed is a crack in the shaft of my 907 D2 driver. Instead of reshafting it, I'm thinking about just replacing the club and keeping the 907 head as a paper weight / pen holder.   I have a big desk   :-)

I want to know what market the 3 different 909 drivers are supposed to be applied to. Of the pros who haven't already gone to the 910 series, it seems all of them who are using 909 series drivers are using the D2 or D3... What about the Comp? Where's it supposed to fit in? Who is it marketed to? BTW - I couldn't believe some of the pros were still using 905 series drivers!

I'm curious which model might be best for me.

I'm 61, 6'7" tall, still with reasonable flexibility in this old body. I shoot on either side of 80 pretty consistently, 77-83 range mostly. I wouldn't tell you that my ego isn't bruised as I've lost yardage while growing older, having once been scratch and played on my college golf team.

My swing speed with a driver ranges between 90-95 mph. I can stretch to 100 with effort, but it's not worth the loss of control.  My ball speed is about 140 mph and my typical carry is about 220-230 yards. Those figures are based on readings from my Radar device... handy gadget...

I don't know what my spin rate is. I typically hit my 907 D2 10.5* driver what I consider to be mid height, probably towards low and I usually play a pretty well controlled fade, though I can move it right to left if I have to. The draw just isn't as accurate a shot for me.

So, between the D2, D3 or Comp, can someone please tell me which might be best directed at my physical makeup and type?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

Cathi answered me by email, so her reply isn't shown here in full, but essentially, she explained how the Comp is designed to hit the ball higher than the D2 or D3, both of which would probably produce a bit less spin too.

Since I tend to hit my driver, a stiff shaft 907 D2 10.5* pretty low, the Comp sounded like it might be interesting to me. So, I got on the launch meter at a local store. The fancy little launch meter said I would hit the Comp a little higher and a couple yards farther than the 909 D2. By the time I hit the Comp, I had already hit the 909 D2 quite a few times and I my swing speed was down a few mph. It looks like a reasonable bet for me, so I found a very good condition used one at another one of their stores and I bought it. It should arrive late this week or early next week.

Why is the new club you order always across the country? I can't play this weekend anyway.

My new Comp driver arrived a few minutes ago. It must have been a store sample because there's nothing on the sole or face to suggest it's ever been outside on a golf course. Essentially, it looks brand new. It's in the bag and if it ever stops raining, I'll take it to the range and see what happens.

Looks good, a bit deeper face to back than my 907 D2 driver, but still a pretty traditional look, so I'm happy looking at it. Swingweight is the same as D2. I'll put on the same midsize grip I always use. All I need is a head cover... didn't realize it didn't come with one. Maybe my Garfield cover would work.

In slightly less than a month that I've had the 909 D Comp driver, I've not hit it well at all. I don't know whether there is something in the shaft dynamics that don't fit my swing, but I'm all over the place with the Ozix 5 shaft.

I've had my 907 D2 reshafted after all... and it was such a great pen holder... and I put it back in my bag this morning. It was like an old friend had moved back to town.

I guess I'll sell the Comp now...
