I would not worry so much about what it should look like as would about what I am trying to achieve. What is you goal. To hit a draw, a fade or a straight ball? How do you hit it currently? Those numbers aide you in achieving the loft of the club. If you go down, you will lower you loft by .75. If you go up one, you will increase your loft by .75, and the one more, another .75. (Example: Your driver is a 9.5. Your can lower it to a 8.75, raise it one to a 10.25, and raise it again to a 11.00). The 917s have a weighted system where you can change the weight to draw or fade. It can get confusing if you have never used the system. It might be best to take it to a Titleist Certified Fitter or find a buddy who has a 917D and have him do it for you. A fitter can help you get the right set up and results that you are trying to achieve. If you belong to a club, you pro can probably assist you. It is not necessary to mark the shaft to adjust the club. There are two ways that you can add more draw to your club.
The first would be to adjust the surefit hosel. The hosel will allow you to adjust loft and lie angle. If the height of your shot is fine, you can move the setting to B2 or A2 (assuming you are RH). If you want to add draw curvature to your ball flight, you can also use the CG "draw" weight in the bottom of the head.

What model D3 do you have 913, 915, 917 or earlier? Cathi gave you some good info and if you don't have the manual I attached a copy that shows that as you increase the loft the face angle closes 1.0 and 2.0 degrees vs. the .05 degrees open in setting A1. I play my 917 D3 8.5 in B2 or C2 and have the 16G draw biased weight installed.

Chuck, if you are saying that you are trying to keep the same spot from A1 that you would in say D4, then heck no, that is not what you are supposed to do. The shaft (and the position of your grip) moves and by doing this, it changes the lie angle of the club head and the loft of the club head. By moving those things, it changes how YOU will hit it and find the best setting for your swing just as Cathi said.

It also depends on your baseline swing. The hosel settings won't correct a solid fade/slice as much as adjusting the weighting options on the head. The hosel settings are for fine-tuning your club after fitting for weight balances, head loft, and shaft. None of these can correct swing flaws resulting in uncontrollable fades or slices.
