Mid Handicap Irons

  1. I have recently started looking in to a new set of irons and have made some interesting (at least to me) findings. I’m a 12 handicap and the weakest part of my game is my irons, but I may up for it with a good short game. I have been doing research about different irons from various brands using the usual resources of forums, reviews, and YouTube. The interesting thing to me is that the common theme I have found is that most people suggest more players or players distance irons for mid-handicap golfers which to me seems contradictory to what someone like myself needs. I have been fit for all of my clubs except irons and I am looking for others thoughts on this subject (ie game improvement vs players irons for mid handicappers).

  2. Sometimes you just need to ignore what is "supposed" to be forgiving and just demo a variety of options that look good to you and work with a fitter. I had a guy absolutely stripe the MB's every single time, but was wildly mis-hitting the T100's. He was about an 8 handicap - he knew he was going to be "playing up" to the MB's and he had no margin of error, but when it came down to it he was very efficient with them and pured them every time. He went with the MB's - it helped he had always wanted blades, but wasn't sure he could handle them. The club doesn't know what your handicap is. Pay attention to optimal trajectory windows and dispersion tendencies and work with a fitter to get you set up right.

This is spot on! For me, so much is the look of the iron at address....and I much prefer the look of a thin line and little to no offset. I was a 12.8 handicap when I switched from png i210 to the Titleist 620MB's in April; I'm down to a 9.7 now. I just love the look and feel....as well as the consistency of well struck shots. Much tighter dispersion than I ever had with the i210s. Play what makes you happy.

I love the looks of blades with their minimum offset and sleekness. I would love to shape the ball with them and get all that feedback, however, as much as I would like to play with MB irons, they do not suit my game. I am currently playing AP3s which I love, and I was fitted for my irons. For Christmas, I know (hope) that with my current game, I could potentially opt for a mixed bag: perhaps T100s and T200s.

Having said that, I think that the best option is to get custom fitted for your irons.

    Looks versus Performance

For me irons have to suit my game rather than suit my eye.

You know thats quite funny. I still hit my 690MB's from 2001. I have thought many times that I need more forgiveness or distance out of my clubs, but I can pure the MB's 90% of my swings. It might be that they are just familiar, but I can control the trajectory very easy, as well as move the ball any way I'd like. I'm only hitting my 7 iron 165, which in todays standards seems quite short. But I can hit it consistently 165 and have less than 10 yards of total dispersion. Also I still carry a 2 iron, which seems like you cant even get anymore. I still use it 3-4 times a round, especially off the tees where I need 230-240 under the wind or shorter par 4's or even those 220 Par 3's did into the wind.

As Jeff mentioned, don't worry about what people tell you what you "should" play, but really go out and test them all out. The best thing about clubs these days is that you can build a combo set for what gives you the most confidence when playing.

I'm a 12 handicap and I play a combo set of MBs/CBs. But a lot of people always ask me why I play MBs and I just say because I like them and I like my golf do the talking. I have tried everything and to be honest, for me, I don't think I even gained that much distance when trying distance irons, player distance irons or anything like that. I wanted to get better and I know that MBs will help ME get to where I want to be.

Find the right set of club heads that you like and the correct shaft combo and you'll be good to go.

If what most people said was correct, we’d all be buying off the rack sets. Find a fitter you trust, and work with that person. Seeing you hit your current bag, a recommendation can be suggested for a mixed or full set based on comparing to your clubs. My one lesson I slowly learn is my in-depth analysis is like free advise and just as valuable In club selection. I now trust my fitter and Trackman.

Par is generally a score of 72 strokes. In order to help a player to typically playing to the high 80's with some consistently around par, the golfing organizations (USGA/R&A, etc.) develop a handicap system. For simplicity, someone normally hitting 90 will get 1 stroke per hole to compete with a player normally shooting par.

Single digit players typically break 80, mid-teens (15) handicaps typically score in the 80's, and higher handicaps (20+) score in the 90's and above. In order to have a handicap, scores across enough events are averaged. The math is complex (the difficulty of the course is also a factor), so filing them with a golf association is the easiest way to track yours.

Casual players don't need one, but in order to participate in a USGA or state GA event, one is required.

I would suggest you start a new thread and ask the specific question(s) you want help with. Surely, you'll get the answers you need, or at the very least, pointed in the right direction. I look forward to helping if I can.
  12. I am a 18 handicap and have been golfing for just over a year. I tried Ap1's as that matched what i felt, hated em.
Ap2's much more consistent and I feel more confident.

Tried the new irons-Best #'s came from T100s and that turf interaction felt amazing!

If you were fitted for all you other clubs. Why were you not fitted for your irons? The fitters should be able to come up with the right shaft and head combination that should answer all your questions. I always go to a pro for these kinds of answers. The two fitters I use have over twenty five years experience and are Titleist certified. They have never failed me. Whenever I get new clubs, "I get fitted". With respect.
