I'm curious to read opinions from all of you who have a skycaddie or gps software for their smartphones . Especially those of you who are in the warmer climates!!! I just downloaded the GolfLogix GPS for my Blackberry Torch. It seems pretty cool. The price is much better than my SkyCaddie. Any thought's on you experiences with the GPS software and/or systems?

I have used Greenfinder on my Blackberry and later on my Droid smartphone.  It was pretty nice but this year I have upgraded to GolfLogix.  GolfLogix has a ton more courses and options.  I enjoy it.  I personally have not used the skycaddies because of the huge cost.  But I have had the opportunity to compare Greenfinder to Skycaddie and the Greenfinder seemed to be a yard or 2 more accurate.  I have also compared the smartphone apps to laser range finders and they seem to be within a yard.

    Good luck

I have had GolfLogix on my iPhone for well over a year now, and it is great. The only thing I recommend is if you can turn down your brightness settings and and turn all your push notifications off while on the course, this will save battery life A TON!!! I love the fact that I can keep track of all my stats, i.e. putts, fairways hit, GIR, sand saves, etc. I like it a lot better than Sky Caddie, but there are friends I know that have both and live by Sky Caddie. I think it's mainly personal preference. Hope this helps.

I use the GolfShot app on the iPhone and it works great for keeping stats. It does not have the best accuracy for distance but is usually within 10 yds. I pair this with the GolfPlan app and it really helps track trends in my game. I cant say enough about how much I love the stat tracker on Golfshot. I think GolfShot was free, but there was a small charge for GolfPlan.

I have used both the Golf Logix and SkyCaddie.  Personally I prefer SkyCaddie.  You pay a little more for it but what you get is a ground-mapped course (versus overhead aerial view mapping).  I have found my Skycaddie to be much more accurate than the Golf Logix was.   I have found that when standing on or next to a yardage marker, the Golf Logix would frequently be off by 5 yards (sometimes more) and this has never happened with my Skycaddie (have never noticed it to be off by more than a yard or two and this is rare).  Plus the SkyCaddie rotates the green based on your position, and you can move the cursor on the green to get accurate distances to anywhere on the green.  For me, SkyCaddie wins hands down.  Not knocking the Golf Logix, just giving my personal preference based on my experience.

this is a personnel thing.  I use the skycaddie, it costs $49.00 for the year and covers the entire USA.  I have gone on line and looked at some of the other per set course apps and models and found that they cover many courses but for some reason when I plan to play a specific course that is not centralized, the course is not available. I quess it depends on the area and courses one plays as to the availability of courses.  In addition one of the magazines did a study and found that the distances on the GPS dedicated systems is much more accurate than the apps for phones.

I played with an indivdual who was using his phone app and he had to constantly reset it for every shot, time comsumin g and annoying.

I have an Iphone App called Viewti.  It is pretty nice.  it is based on the google map so it may not be so accurate.  It is definitely hard to find the exact pin location and see the distance to it since it just gives you the distance to the center of the green.  However, you can move around a circle in the map to see the distance from your point to that circle and from that circle to center of the green.

It even gives you the slope of the hole from teebox to green.  It has other nice features such as measuring your shot distances, GIR, putts and so on.  However, it becomes a bit hard to operate and a bit annoying at times.  That's why I rely on my rangefinder.

Take it out of your bag, point and shoot to the pin to get very accurate distances.  However, if I am standing on a teebox on a blind hole, I would take out my iphone to see the bird's eye view of the course just to hit a safe/cutting-corner teeshot if needed.

I recently upgraded from the sky caddie4 to the SGX and absolutely love it. I tried using my iPhone, but the battery get's sucked dry. While initially the SGX and membership may be costly, I am a firm believer that more is less in the long run.

I have a skycaddie 3.5 and have used it for years. I am very happy with the performance.  My question, Is the SGX worth changing to?  Are the functions in the SGX that much better and helpful?

    Vincent,

If your's is working you are good to go. I'd keep what you have. I upgraded because my 4 quit working and to me it was just time for an upgrade. The functions are crystal clear and very easy though, which does make it nice. I've started tracking my putts per round with the feature so I can track them online. I may use some others in the future as well.
