910 same color top and face makes it hard to aim

  1. I was really looking forward to buying one of the new 910 drivers but, when I went to hit them, I saw that the face and top are the same color. Really bad idea, guys. For me, that makes it much harder to aim the club. There is a reason that the vast majority of metal woods (including previous Titleist) have a face that is a different color than the top: the contrast in color makes it much easier to aim. I don't understand how anyone could think that making them the same color was a good idea. I realize that they're trying to make good looking clubs, but that shouldn't override utility. I'm really disappointed about this. I'm probably going to buy a different club.

    Interesting thought

I've only had 1 set of woods with painted face, and I don't recall it causing or not causing alignment difficulties.

I do like a target on the face(904f), but I hit a 906f(straight scoring lines) better, is it the face or other properties. BTW I just had to go out and look to see if my 906 has a painted face(it doesn't).

If you hadn't brought this up, I'd never thought about it one way or the other.

Kevin, in my opinion, the new look helps camoflauge the look created by the different settings.  That's the most interesting and important aspect to this new line of woods.

What are the techniques you use to aim? Spot in front of the ball?  Maybe we can work on ways to help you.

    Kevin,

I also find it interesting that an all black clubhead would give you trouble aiming at your target. I personally pick a target in front of my ball on the line of my target and line the club to that point. I don't notice a difference between an all black club compared to a black/silver contrast. I guess it's different for each individual, but like Ryan Crysler asked how do you aim your club to your target?

Well thats the thing about making clubs you can't please everyone. I've been using Painted face clubs since the R7 came out. me personaly i love the black face clubs. i tend to hit them more consitant and face color has not affected my aim. Personaly i was stoked to see them come out with a black face club. you also have to keep in mind your Irons dont have contrasting colors, original woods didnt have contrasting colors alot of early metal clubs didnt have contrasting colors. Clubs evolve and as time goes on they will make clubs you like and dont like. I'm sure Titleist appreciates your opinion on face color when i bought the R7 super quad from taylormade back in 2007 they sent me a survay and they had 4 or 5 quistions directly aimed at the black face concept. So im sure some one at R&D apreciates your opinion.

This is an interesting observation.  I hit the 907 D2 and the contrast in face color to top color has never been something I conscientiously use to aim.  I pick a spot 12" to 18" in front of the ball that is on my target line, then square the face to that line.  The good thing about any Titleist driver is that is sets square by itself.  You don't have to manipulate the club.

When I demo'ed the 910 D2 the face color difference did not even register.  I guess I'm not very observant.

Love my new 910D3. All the guys at my club, who have hit it concur. I couldn't disagree more with this opinion. I have played with the club in cloudy & sunny conditions. The all black face/top versus the white ball really allows the eye to frame and focus on the ball, thus ensuring good directional face/target alignment. That's why I can't figure out what all the to-do is about the R-11. The white ball gets totally lost with all the white coloring...it was like a blur. I have swung the R11 in a simulator, now that one is hard on the eye alignment wise, at least for me. The ball-club face relation gets totally fused & absorbed with the top of the club head. I think the white is a "sexy" color, but to me, TM really made a functional design mistake, but it was simply good gimmick marketing.

HI, NOW I KNOW WHY I LIKE MY 909 D3 SET UP. I JUST CANT USED TO THE LOOKS OF THE 910 AT ADDRESS, GOOD OBSERVATION.

  10. This is a follow up to my original post, in response to the replies. To aim a driver, I use the line formed by the intersection of the face with the top of the club.  It's that line that allows me to see where the face is aimed. My goal is to make that line perpendicular to the target. When the face and top of the club are the same color, it's very difficult to discern that line. On the 910 drivers, I have a very hard time seeing it. When the face and top are different colors (as they are in the vast majority of metal woods), it's very easy to see that line. This problem also applies to the 910 fairway metals and hybrids, since they have a face and top that are the same color.

When I aim an iron, my goal is to make the bottom edge of the club face perpendicular to the target. With metal woods, you can't really see the bottom edge of the face at address, so I use the top edge. But I can't see the top edge clearly when the face and top are the same color. By the way, my vision is fine.

This has nothing to do with whether I am aiming at the target or at an spot 2 feet in front of the ball. Regardless of what you are aiming at, you must look at some part of the club to attempt to point it at your aiming spot. With metal woods, I use the line formed by the intersection of the face and top. Perhaps other people use some other part of the club, such as the small aiming line painted on the top of the club. I don't use that. Maybe I'm in the small minority. I guess we'll see.

I'm going to buy a set of AP2 irons, but I'm disappointed that the 910's won't be making it into my bag. At least not as long as they have the same face and top color.

I really appreciate you coming on TeamTitleist and posting your thoughts.  The Team monitors every post so they are taking note.  I may have said this here or on another thread, but in my opinion, the black-on-black design actually helps "camoflauge" the very face you use to align because the adjust-ability factor.

One of the most important factors to clubs is their visual appearance at address and if you can't stand it...there's zero chance it's going in the bag!  Kind of like a putter.   I would be intrigued if you were to visit my Studio and see if there's a away to appeal to your eyes using loft,  settings and ball alignment.

    RC and Titleist Staff,

I not only switch from the R7TP irons to the AP2's but have also switched from the R9 Supertri to the 910 and after only having them for about a month I have finally broken par. The reason this is so significant is because as a 5 handicap I used to break par once maybe twice a year. Now doing it so soon, my confidence level and expectations of the new equipment has skyrocketed. In regards to the gentleman with aiming issues, maybe he is thinking to much. Once I'm over the ball at address everything else is on auto-pilot. To me the time to think is before the swing or on the range. Thanks again for all you do for golf.

Hmmmm.. Never really notice the face of my driver at address as my head is positioned behind the ball.  But interesting opinion.
