My last three drivers have been Titleist.  I just got the 910D2 and this time instead of putting a stock shaft into it, I went with one of the custom shafts and put the RIP 70 in it.  The stock is the RIP 60.  I thought the 60 felt light, and I prefer the heavier feel and lower launch of the 70.  I'm planning on getting the 910 fairway, and was going to put the RIP 70 in it also, but I noticed that the stock shafts for the fairway woods are heavier then the stock driver shafts.  For example the fairway stock is the Ahina 82, and the driver stock shaft is the Ahina 70.  I was wondering what the rational for putting heavier shafts in the fairway woods is.

There are a few rationales for the weighting and typically we like to see the driver shaft be the lightest, then fairway, then hybrid, then irons.

The key is that as the shaft gets shorter, we need more gram weight to maintain consistent swing weight and feel.

Ryan is right, the overall swingweight would be lighter in a 3-wood vs. the driver if the same shafts were used due to the 3-wood shaft length being shorter. Typically a stock 3-wood shaft is 2 inches shorter than the driver (43 inches compared to a stock 45 inch driver shaft).

Thanks.  I never even thought about the shorter length of the fairway wood shaft.
