D2 Launch & Spin

  1. Hi,

Hopefully somebody can help. I went to my local fitter yesterday with the intention of buying a 910 driver and tried several combination of shaft in the D2 head. Finally settled on 9.5 with the Diamana Kai'li for Titleist in stiff. However, just before i finished hitting they gave that new white driver from a rival company to try. I was disappointed to find that not only did it launch higher with noticeably less spin, the carry was consistently 10-15 yards longer. Now i've set my heart on the 910 so I want to give it another chance before I have to buy the ''other'' driver. Any advice on the setting I should have the 910 on to bring down the spin and should i be looking at the D3 head to reduce spin?

    Thanks

D3 will launch with less spin but also low launch.  You may just need to find a shaft that has a low kick but then that will increase the spin.  Anyway, try to go to fitter again.  Better yet, try it on the golf course since it may be a bit different on the course.

  3. i agree with albert launch moniters arnt the best expecially if its at a store if its at a fitter then maybe its correct but never trust a golf store monitor. Buy the d2 with the setting you like go to the course and see how it plays from the tee or go to a range and test it out

Well ya have to realize that your local fitter wants to sell a driver too. He tried fitting you for the Titleist you wanted, but when he saw you weren't sure, he went to a driver that he knew would get you down in spin and hit further. I would though go back as the previous poster said and go through the D3 head and shafts and compare it to the "white head."

I do agree you should take them both out to the course or the driving range and you could at least see the ball flights. The range session may just give you more info and peace of mind.

    Daniel,

I definitely would go back to your local Titleist Fitter and try the 910 D3.  If your spin rate is too high the D3 head will cut the spin rate down versus the D2 head.  I can tell you from my fitting experience that I've increased my driving distance by 15 yards since I switched to the 910D3.  My previous driver was the 909D2 / 9.5 degree / UST V2 76 X-Stiff.  My 910 D3 is 9.5 degrees / Project X -7C3 / Stiff.  My spin with the 909 was 3,100 rpm and it is now 2,400 with the 910.  The really nice thing besides the extra distance is my shot dispersion is so much tighter now in windy conditions!  Give the 910 D3 a try.

  6. Thanks for all your responses guys. Just to clarify, I demo'd both drivers on the outdoor range but have yet to see the numbers on a launch monitor. It was really clear to see the flight of R11 was higher launching but then flattened out in mid flight and just carried further than the D2 which did seem to carry more spin. I should say that the R11 was 10.5 degree and the 910 was 9.5 but I just assumed that trying a 10.5 in the D2 would just increase the spin rate. Anyway, before i pull the trigger i'm going to flightscope driver fitting on Friday where they have fitting carts for Titleist and TM. Hopefully I will get a definitive answer and have the option to mix and match heads and adjust settings to find the perfect set up. I will give the D3 a try and see if that will bring the spin down and i'm hoping they will have some graphite design shafts to try as my last 2 drivers have had YS6 and YSQ shafts and they were really long for me as i'm quite a smooth swinger and transition so I need a bit more help loading the shaft. I will post back with the outcome on Friday if anybody is interested. I've secretly got my fingers crossed that the right 910 combination is out there somewhere.

    Thanks again

  7. Daniel, if the D2 was launching lower, I would definitely try the 10.5 . I'm presuming hear that the D2 9.5 was producing a rainbow ball flight but just not as long. If it was spinning too much then I'd have expected it   to go higher  and land short with less roll.

I could be completely wrong here but it sounds to me that for your swing the D2. 9.5 is not producing enough spin at 9.5 to maximise trajectory rather than too much.

    Regards Chris

Go to a fitter thats not a RETAILER. And if you want to stay in a stock shaft the ahina will generate less spin then the kai but he probably didnt have that shaft so he didnt try it. An actual titlest fitter will have all the shafts stock and up-chargeshafts and guarantee you there's a combination that will work.

What worries me about your fitting experience was you, "Finally settled...".

If your fitter is getting you to settle then he isn't doing you any favors.  If you are not getting results that are going to help you play the best golf you can, then don't buy it.  Settling will just cause a lack of confidence in the future.

I never recommend a driver that won't help an individual play better.  Finding a combination that brings the spin down may or may not help you play better if possible swing faults are causing the excess spin.

  10. I agree with KPC here.  It seems like you would most benefit from working with the right fitting partner.  Have you had the chance to visit a more advanced Titleist fitting partner?

  11. I'm going to a different fitter tomorrow, who have flightscope, an outdoor hitting area and a surefit driver and iron cart. Hopefully I can see results which are backed up by the numbers. A couple of questions though:

    1. What are the numbers for ideal launch conditions. ie. Launch angle and spin rate etc.

    2. Also the fitter i've found on fittingworks has a surefit driver and iron cart. Apparently these carts have 16 different driver shafts but it doesn't detail which shafts. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  12. Well guys to put this topic to bed, Ive just had my fitting so heres the results. Picked a fitter from the fittingworks website that was around 1  hour from my house. Turns out they are a fitter for other manufacturers and Titleist and had fitting carts for all 3 and are in the top 5 fitting centres in the UK. Anyway managed to hit both R11 & 910 D2&D3 and the results visually and on the monitor were clear to see. R11 was around 10 yards longer through the air and 4-5 yards more roll than the 910. dispertion was also tighter by 3-4 yards. I tried all different combinations on the 910, different lofts, regular & stiff, standard shafts and exotic shafts and none could get within 10 yards carry of R11. I then optimized the R11, so added 1 degree of extra loft to make it 10 degree, and changed the clubface to closed. This combo added a further 6 yards to standard set up and finished numbers were around 276 carry and 12 yards of roll which I was happy with for the UK at this time of year. So despite my hopes that I could be fitted into a 910 the R11 was the right club for me. Very interesting though to see all the numbers on screen, also realised that my current irons also spin a little too much and I may benefit from a switch to project x 5.5 shafts which on the demo iron i tried add 5-6 yards onto my current 6 iron yardage. Also noticed I have the ball alittle far forward in my stance and when I pulled it back an inch results were much improved. All in all a great outing for £25, they even sat my Dad in a comfy chair and gave him a cup of tea or two while he waited. Great service and well worth doing if you've never been fitted for clubs before. Thanks for all your feedback guys.

    Cheers
