710 CB vs 710 AP2

  1. I am torn between the 710 CB's and the 710 AP2's.  I like the look of the CB's, but feel the AP2's may give me the extra "help" from time to time.  I do prefer the narrower sole of the CB's.  Thoughts?

As for shaft, I have tried the Project X 5.5 and Project X Flighted 5.5.   Both ballooned like crazy on me.  I liked the way the Flighted helped launch my 4/5/6 irons a little higher, but I still hit my 7/8/9/W way too high.

Should I just go back to the good old DG S300 or go with a Project X 6.0 Flighted or maybe a Rifle 6.0?  I hit my 6 iron about 165-170 (at sea level here in Florida!)

    Thanks!

    Mike

Try adjusting the lies and lofts.  The AP2's tend to fly and spin more than the CBs, so our players typically take home stronger lofted AP2 sets.

You should consider a blended set as well.

The s400 shaft can lower ball flight a smidge too!

I would like to add some advice but i think RC pretty much nailed that one on the head.

  4. Sorry, but do not agree with stronger lofts. It creates a big gap at the scoring end of the set, the wedges, I have played very competitive golf for 30 years and still play of a 3 hdcap. Go for the CB's in standard lofts, get your wedge combination right and go with DG 300 or try KBS but have them fitted with a qualified KBS fitter. I play a lot of golf in windy conditions and the KBS works great. Lie angles are very important. Trust me the stronger lofts only stuff up distance. sorry to say but you might need to look at a change in ball as well. the new Pro V's have been changed to give more spin given the rule change, they are also now more difficult to keep down given the more spin on short irons.

I agree with Ryan and respectively disagree with Jakes D concerning the lofts.  You can easily gap the clubs to specific distances and add wedges to make up any differences which will give you a lower ball flight.  That being said both the CB's and the AP2's are great clubs.  I found that I hit the CB's as high as the AP2's but the MB's were a lot better in keeping the flight down.

With your 6 iron yardages I would go with the TTDG S-300 which is a lower spinning lower launching shaft then either the KBS or the Rifles.

What is your typical miss, high, low on the club face or more toward the heel and toe?  If it is high or low than take a serious look at the MB's.  They are by far the easies most forgiven blade I have hit and not much if any less difficult to hit then the CB's.

One more quick question for Ryan,

When you custom order irons with different lofts and lies from standard does Titleist bend the clubs at the factory or are the clubs manufactured to certain lies?

Titleist will bend your specs accordingly by a highly trained professional.  You can be specific as you want and they will take the necessary TLC to make it happen.

I just ordered some Custom AP2's and I had the Lie bent to order, and I know they can do the same with the loft.  I'm sure they'll come out great no doubt.

    Great topic, Mike.

I recently bought a set of CB's and absolutely love the look and feel of the club. However, since I only play to an 8, I often wonder how much the added forgiveness of the AP2's would help on off-center hits.

Question: Can anyone quantify the amount of forgiveness the AP2 provides over the CB?

I initially chose the CB over the AP2 because I'm a digger and the CB seemed to cut through the grass effortlessly.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

MIke (from Mike in Florida also),

I've used Rifle Shafts for @10 years. Precisions for 5, then switched to a set of irons that had Rifle Flighted shafts. Within 3 days I switched out the shafts on the 8-PW short irons to regular precisions. As strong as I was (and at a 5), I couldn't get the short irons to go anywhere. A good friend that's a 3 tried them and found the same thing. The Tour Launch shafts in the short irons were useless to me. Once I changed the shafts, the distance came. Didn't have the same problem with the mid and high launch shafts in the 3-7.

I've seen similar issues "flighted" shafts.  We tend to avoid them for our players and stick to the Project X, KBS or Dynamic Gold.
