I'm in the market to finally replace my 907 D2 which replaced my 905R (the best driver ever engineered).  I tend to keep a driver in the bag for a long time as replacing one annualy is cost-prohibitive and ultimately having to adjust to a new club on a regular basis is absurd.

I'm a 6.1 handicap and don't really try to work the ball in any specific direction.  I would tend more to draw than to fade.  Right now I carry about 265-275 with my 907 and usually end up in the 275-285 range.  I get very little roll with my driver.  My 907 is a 9 degree with a stiff shaft and mid kick point.  I have a higher, less penetrating ball flight than I would like.  Without getting fitted (which I am in 3 weeks), what would anybody recommend as far as the driver and shaft as there are many options.

I'm looking to increase my ball speed (which should help carry) and obtain optimal forward roll.  My mind is telling me D3 but something is intriguing about the D2.  Then I have the shaft decision.  Too many decisions.

Obviously to best answer these questions, I need to get fitted and I am.  Is there anybody out there who has been fitted?  What are you using?  What do you think?

Great topic and you definitely hit the nail on the head by planning to get fit. I can't stress the importance of fitting enough and that is what is so great about the 910 family is that we are now able to get dialed in like the pros. For me, I went in with a completely open mind and turned to the fitter to help me down the path to the best driver for my game.

My previous driver was the 909D2, 9.5* with a Mitsubishi Fubuki 63 in stiff.  Definitely a solid set up and it worked hard for me the past couple of seasons.

I hit both the 910D2 and 910D3 in my fitting in a few different lofts with a number of different shafts. As we worked through the different set ups I was feeling really comfortable with both but leaning towards the 910D3, 10.5* head. The fitter was liking the numbers as well so we started zeroing in on shafts.

After hitting shots with a few different options we landed on the UST Mamiya ATTAS 6 in stiff. The numbers were solid and I loved the feel. We worked through a few SureFit Tour hosel settings to get everything dialed in and within a few swings, I was crushing it on the C-1 setting. So I pulled the trigger and ended up putting this set-up in the bag.

I played my first rounds last weekend and I have to say that I am beyond happy. After knocking off some rust, I was hitting everything solid with the new metals.

The fitting experience was a lot of fun and I have complete confidence in my 910D3 knowing that it was fit for me. Good luck and let us know how everything turns out.

    Ryan,

Without seeing you swing a golf club, it is impossible to make any recommendation of shaft and head type.  I can tell you that you will enjoy the fitting process and come out confident that you will be getting the right driver and shaft for your swing.  I think that's one of the most important things with the fitting besides getting the right driver is you know that you have the best equipment for your particular swing and your not always wondering if you should be playing a different head/shaft set-up.  best of Luck and ask lots of questions at your fitting.

I went through the fitting process for the Driver, Irons and wedges.    The process is every bit worth the price.  They will spec your clubs to fit you and help to make the game as enjoyable as possible.

    I have the 910D3 - Project X 7.0(7A3)

    AP2 710's - KBS Tour shafts

Vokey TVD's - KBS Tour shafts

I read Mike D's reply and couldn't agree more.  I too was just fitted and decided on the Kaili shaft but D2.  I'm a 4 but 61 years young.  What I learned from the fitting, changing shafts and loft/lie angles, was with which configuration I hit the ball best.  That, of course, resulted in the longest and most repeated shot shape - in my case straight to a very slight fade.  So my recommendation to you is find someone who will give you plenty of time to make the most informed decision.  Hit a number of balls but get warmed up before you go - loose/stretched - so you can start right out of the gate.  Maybe stop by a range beforehand.

    Ryan,

Awesome post!  I am very similar to you as far as reduced role.  I just received my 910D3 and I love it.  Previously, I was using a 909D3 with a Prototype version of the project x 7A3 shaft (A=x flex) Your explanation of your ball flight is almost exactly my own for carry and launch, but I get even less roll.  Prior to the Project x, I tried the stock Voodoo in Stiff flex and a very stiff/ extra stiff Matrix Ozik code 8 - which felt great, but still ballooned.

Honestly, I did not go through the "fitting process".  The reason being, even more than performance, aesthetics and perception of a particular brand is actually more important to me than performance.  I have been through fittings in the past and, regretfully - but honestly, other brands of drivers typically fit my swing better (from a sheer numbers standpoint); which, is a problem given my, admittedly obsessive, loyalty to Titleist (I am a 14 club Titleist guy with FJ shoes, gloves and rain gear).

Prior to purchase, I did check my launch angle/ spin rate and had good results with the 910D3 8.5* using the x flex Ahina (the one on the standard fitting cart), set to C-2 - 7.75* loft - 59.25* lie angle,  112 swing speed, 168 ball speed, 12.8* launch, 2950 spin; however, I didn't like the feel of the shaft. Just this week, I received my shiny new 910D3 8.5* with the GD AD DI-8 X.  The shaft feel AWESOME and the ball flight is very penetrating.  I couldn't be happier with my decision.

    Great feedback.

This was exactly what I was looking for.  I'm getting fitted for a Titleist only.  The only thing in my bag that isn't a Titleist is my 3 iron (Cobra) and some shag balls.  I refuse to play another brand.  When I took the game up, I was blessed having Titleist irons and swear by the brand.  The best club in my bag is probably my 8 year old Scott Cameron (with my jumbo grip) which I refuse to replace.

I appreciate you sharing the settings on your purchase.  As our "issues" with our previous clubs sound the same, this may benefit my game.  Definetely interesting on the Proect X vs. Ahina shaft.  It's a great option to add the Project X at no additional charge.

Let me know how much extra carry and roll you get with your D3.  I can only assume tweaking it to a 7.75 is going to drastically lower your ball flight and increase your roll.  I have a lot of forced carries and don't necessarily want to gain distance through roll, rather from both carry and roll.

I will know better when I do a real ceteris paribus (all other things being equal) comparison at my normal course, but so far at the range, it looks like any change in my carry distance was negligible with +/- 10 yds of additional roll (hopefully even more).  The ball flight is very penetrating, but somehow, seems to stay in the air forever.

Somewhere on the internet, maybe this site, there is a very indebth comparrison of all the stock (no upcharge) shafts and their playing characteristics.  The Project x offering scored the highest, and although, I haven't hit the (made for) Titleist version or the version released to the market, it has been a very good shaft for me for several years.  Not that I don't ever make a bad swing, and consequently, a bad miss, but I haven't had any trouble controlling the ball even with my hardest swings - seems to produce a very predictable ball flight.

If you are interested in some of the custom shaft offerings, they are very reasonable.  I priced the shaft that I ordered with my 910D3 and it is $365.00.  The upcharge is only $150.00 (althought some are higher).  The Graphite Design AD DI-8 (I like a very heavy shaft) I ordered is very stable with exceptional feel.  Also, even though others have the same clubhead, few will have the same shaft - don't ask me why that is important, but for some reason, it is (to me).

I just recently switched to Titleist. The fitting process opened my eye's to many things. During the fitting process, with different shafts and

setting on the adjustable, I was completely amazed at the difference in numbers, all from swing speed, backspin, ball speed, smash factor. I settled on the 910D3 with stiff RIP shaft. This is proving itself out on the driving range and golf course. So enjoy the fitting, and do not stop

until you check them all. Good luck

While I am still waiting to get fitted at the end of the month, I went up to my golf club Friday and played around with a demo D3.  In reading some of the posts, I decided to hit the 9.5 adjusted to D1 (lowered the loft by .75) with the Project X shaft.

All I have to say is WOW!!!!  The ball flight was penetrating, and roll was superb considering the range was wet and soft.  I took both the D3 and my 907 D2 out to hole 18 which is a 560 yard par five which requires a pretty straight drive before it doglegs left and downhill toward the green.  I hit my 907 about 270.  The fairway was wet so my tee shot actually backed up from the ball mark.  I then hit the D3 about 285 and actually got some forward roll out of it.  I put two great swings on the both shots, but the shear distance gain was amazing.  I'm sold on the D3 and am going to wait until I get fitted to make sure everything is right.  In the mean time, I may go tinker with different settings.  The Project X shaft is AMAZING.  It has a nice mid kick point and feels firm.  I'm definetley sitting on this shaft.

I like the reduction in loft to virtually an 8.75*, but noticed that some of the shots would go straight but end up barely tailing off to the right (not a slice, push, etc.).  Is there another setting somebody would recommend?  My club is very good about letting me use this for the time being, especially since I have an interclub on Sunday.  If I could get a recommendation on what somebody thinks, that may help me out moving forward.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
