What I would like to know is why on my ap 1 irons that the pitching wedge is 45 degrees where most of them are 48 degrees. What I am saying is that by having 45 degrees and then my wedges start at 52-56-60 well between 45 and 52 it makes a difference so what is the norm?

  2. What I found was that despite the stronger lofts I actually hit the weaker lofted clubs further as the AP1s launch the ball higher and spin the ball more thus I lost distance and hence the requirement for stronger lofts.

With the X100 shaft I hit the AP1 6iron and 185 carry and the AP2 190 carry despite the AP1s being 2 degrees stronger.

I have recently changed from a 48 vokey PW to the AP1 PW and I have not really gained any distance.

What I would recommend is having the same shaft set up from your PW to your 52 wedge to keep the gaps in tact.

Ap1's also have a 50* wedge in the set

There is no norm for the loft of a particular club, PW will be greater than 9i, 8i......and so on

When designing clubs for forgiveness, you start at the 3i, then you make the 4i and it must have the desired distance gap the feel and forgiveness of the 3i, and then the 5i, and so on. So the PW is what it is, it has the desired distance gap from the 9i.

And you'll probably find that the Ap1 50* wedge matches the desired distance gap from the pw. Then you dump the 52 and use the 56 and 60.

Of course the 52* might fit the gap nicely, its not loft gap you look at, it is distance gap. That 52* just might hit the ball the same distance as the Ap1 50* wedge.

  4. Hi Lynda -

    Great question!

The AP1 irons are designed for players looking for help getting the ball up in the air quicker with more distance and added forgiveness.  Across the industry there has been a shift to stronger lofted in clubs targeted at the aspiring golfer.  This may create some gaping problems with wedge sets.

Typically, it is best to keep 4-6 degrees between the wedges in your set (including the PW).  Right now, you are outside of that range and you most likely have an uncomfortable gap in between your AP1 PW and your 52.  You need to identify what your yardages are with your current wedges, where the gaps are...and what lofts best fill those yardage gaps.  A local Titleist fitting partner is best suited to assist in this process.

A quick fix might be replacing your 52 with a 50 degree.  This will keep 4-6 degrees gap between all your wedges.  However, just be sure that you have wedges that fill the yardages you are most likely to encounter on the course and you don't have any uncomfortable gaps.

    Hope this helps...

i have had the Titleist 775's for a few years now and love them.  The PW is 45 so I went to a  Vokey 50 a few years ago and it is the best club in my bag.  I also have a Vokey 56 and 60 and the gaps are right for me but you will need to get fitted and see for yourself.  On a side note I just got one of the new Vokey 200 46 degree wedges and had it bent to 45 to replace the 775 PW.  Love the new club so far.  Hope this helps
