5 Wood or 2 Hybrid

  1. Hi guys,

I am wondering if I should equip my bag with a 5 wood (18*) or a 2 hybrid (17*). My 5 wood goes 255 from the fairway, and 240 from the rough. My 2 hybrid goes 245 from the fairway, but 240 from the rough. Right now i choose my clubs based on course / conditions. Should i go with the 5 wood for distance, or the 2 hybrid for consistency or versatility.

You left out the most important information.

How far do you hit 3w and 3i?

I would also like to know the distances...however, this question has come up alot from my students of the game.  I think that the Hybrid is almost always the better choice after the technology boom of golf in that area.  First of all, you have a real versitile club in your back, not just a 5 wood.  The amount of shot you can do with your 2 hybrid would be multiplied by what shots you already have in your bag.

What I mean is this....for instance.....I own a MP FLI-HI 2 Hybrid (18°) Cut Muscle Iron (I know this is a Titleist forum but unfortunately they don't have one on the market hint hint Titleist) that is a hybrid-iron.

Now for my game (everyone is different), this club is my ultimate utility club.  For instance:

    1.  I can hit that thing to a perfect in between my 3wood and 3 iron distance from anywhere 225-265yds with alot of control.

Low runner, high slight roller, wind cheater, great trajectory on a normal shot, etc. from the fairway.

    2.  I can also hit this thing out of the rough underneath those low lining trees out into the fairway for trouble shots (which I feel this shot has been minimiually used because of the high trajectory of the standard Hybrid), and I mean lower than a 6 foot window way under  that tree....the old punch and low out of trouble.

    3.  Hybrids are way more forgiving on your mishits (including my little blade/iron looking Hi-Fli).......lessons my mistakes.

    4.  Hybrid vs. 5 wood......Hybrid wins hands down in my book. VERSATILITY!!!!!!!!!!

Hope that makes sense, I tried to explain it from my point of view.  Use your game and what kind of shots you have in your bag to make the choice.....Go with the HYBRID Nunzio.....Trust me ;-)

I personally find anything above a 5 hybrid very hard to hit. I have a 7 wood that I don't miss with. Wood vs hybrid is a personal preference. I know a guy that struggles to hit a hybrid but can knock the snot out of a 3 iron. If I have to punch under a tree, I use a 5 hybrid back in my stance or a chipping iron (I can hit a chipping iron 110 yards with a full swing). There's a crossover point where you switch from iron to hybrid and hybrid to wood. For instance, the gap between my 7 iron and 6 iron is maybe 5 yards but I hit a 34H 15 yards farther than my 7 iron. The switch point from hybrid to wood is at the 5H. I see maybe 5 yards between a 5H and a 4H but I have 15 yards between a 5H and a 7 wood.

I think 2 hybrid is right and has more use all around... in very tight lies, in the trees and around the greens. Todd Hamilton chips thu the grass around the greens with a hybrid instead of a wedge.. Distance wise no yardage lost between the 5 wood and 2 hybrid hybrid flies lower I find the club i can use more often is the better club

Consistency>Distance every time.  Unless you're playing a course where you desperately need that extra 10ish yards I would stick with the Hybrid.  I guess ask yourself 'do I find the fairway most of the time', and if that answer is yes then maybe the 5W is right for you, if no then Hybrid is a no brainer.

I agree with all said. There is value in both. It depends on how many hybrids you carry. I carry a 3,4 and sometimes a 5 iron hybrid. I also have a 1 iron,16 degree hybrid and a 3 wood. Hybrids are great for around the green for sure so you need  at least one in the bag. I carry the 5 wood or the 1 iron rescue depending on the course and wind. The 5 wood is a very versatile club. It is easier to hit a cut with than a hybrid. It is easier to hit high over trees and hazards than a lower lofted hybrid. If I'm headed to Windy  Bandon Dunes on the Oregon Coast the 1 iron rescue is better for that boring slight draw into the wind shot!

Another question is which you like hitting better and you have more confidence in. On a practice round when its not busy, find a par 5 and hit a few balls with each from 250. That may make the decision for you easy.

This is just my opinion (I will start with that).

I bought a 2 Hybrid about 6 months ago and I just sold it.  I cannot hit the thing.  I am going to get a 2-Iron now.  The only way that I could get the hybrid to go where I want it to hit it a mile high.  I want to hit the low penetrating shot and that is just  not what I can do with it.  I play at some courses near the ocean and with some dogleg holes into the wind.  I can hit a low blistering 3-iron 10 yards farther and trying to hit the dang hybrid.  That is just the way it is.  I do not know why, but it is.

I hit a 4-wood also.  I know, who hit a 4-wood anymore.  For all cases into the wind, I am better off hitting the 3-iron.

Hope this helps a little, but I will say that all people are different and the 5-wood might work better for you.  You may get a 5-wood and be missing the hybrid.  It is just what works for your game the best.

I agree with Joey. Hybrids just aren't for everyone. I found out way early that I fare better with a 7 wood vs a 3 hybrid. You would also be surprised how penetrating of a shot one can hit with a 7 wood (shorter shaft = thinner hit). There is also negligable distance diff between a 5 wood and 7 wood. I have a golfing partner that can hit a standard 3 iron much better off the grass than a hybrid or a 5 wood. Also, among other things, I switched from a neutral 10.5 degree G2 driver to a Burner Draw HT driver (13 deg) and I actually hit a more penetrating shot with the latter. I average 240 yd or so with this so-called "old man" driver (I tee it low and let it rip).

i actually switched from a 4 wood to a 2 hybrid. Best desision for my golf game.

I would agree - if you work the 2H better than the 5W, use it. In Chris' case - a 4 wood isn't one of the easiest clubs to hit off the deck, either. I also hit a shorter than normal fairway wood (42.5" for a 3 wood and 41.5 for a 7 wood). I found anything above a 4H very difficult to hit and I already am very confident with my 7W. I can nail a 5H (I've hit it close to 200 on a couple occasions).
