  1. In the last year, I've been struggling to close my clubface, causing me to shank the ball with my irons. I have constant fears and thoughts about the shanks. In preparation for our league's year-end Calcutta, throughout the second half of our league season, I worked on hitting hybrids with differing backswing lengths to be able to lessen my iron use. This past Saturday, on the 129 yard 8th hole, I used a 7 hybrid, lofted at 35.5 degrees. Prior to this year, I would have hit an 8 iron but I planned on avoiding irons as much as possible because of my underlying fear. I took between a half and three quarter swing with the 7 hybrid and the ball, a Titleist TruFeel, had a high trajectory. As the ball was in the air, my Calcutta teammate commented that my shot was going to be tight. My ball flew right over the flagstick and landed about a foot right behind the pin. Because of the wet conditions, the ball jumped backwards into the hole. This shot helped calm my nerves the rest of the tournament and we finished in the money. A lot of our league members ridiculed me for using a 7 hybrid on such a short hole but they are unaware of the mental struggles I developed with an iron in my hand. It was special to record my first ace in our Calcutta with a significant amount of money on the line.
