Grips and build up

  1. As I look thru the golf pride grip options I see there are only a few options in jumbo. I was wondering if most layers are using midsized grips and building them up to be able to use the grip of choice and make it a jumbo. I.e. MCC MIDSIZE.

I Figured someone like Ludvig Alberg would have massive hands and need a bigger grip option in the MCC White he uses.

    Any input is appreciated.

I am pretty sure Bryson is one of the few players using large grips. Even most tour players with big hands want the feel they get by gripping more in the fingers to better control the face at impact.

I use the MCC Plus 4 Grips and love them. Have them on all my clubs (except the putter). Might try one of those and have them add four wraps to make them bigger. Do not know how many wraps you can add before you rip the grip. Check with a local repair shop and get their professional opinion.

I use standard grips and build them up. Most professionals do the same in most situations. You can control the size more easily with this plus the grip becomes firmer which gives you better feedback on shots.

I'm 6'8" and have this same problem. I know Bryson uses the JumboMax brand grips, but even with bigger hands I don't like the "oversized" grips. I like the feedback of a firmer grip, so I usually add 4 extra wraps under a midsize grip since, to your point, there are very few jumbo options. I would be careful adding 4 wraps under any cord grip like the MCC (on the heel end) as once you get to 3 or 4 extra wraps it streches out the cord and breaks down very quickly. I currently have 4 extra wraps under my png midsize cord putter grip, and even without swinging that club full it wears down quick.

There was just a study of grip size on tour and very very few were using midsize or larger. I cant remember where it was but it was recent, probably on X

I'm 6'8" and have had this same problem, even with bigger hands I dont like the oversized grips like JumboMax, the ones Bryson and Martin Borgmeier use. I like a firmer grip so I add 4 wraps under midsized grips, like you said there arent many jumbo options. I've only added 4 wraps with with non-cord grips though, be careful when you add wraps under any grip with cord, as the cord will stretch and breakdown very quickly. I've added 2 wraps under the MCCs before with no issue, since the cord is on the butt end of the MCCs it doesnt stretch it as much as it would farther down the grip. For my putter I use a png midsize cord grip with 5 total wraps (larger cord putter grips are also a nightmare to find but I've found a couple options), but even on the putter the stretched out cord wears down super fast. Hope this helps.

Why the tour velvet (Golf Pride) or similar textured grips are among the favorite on tour is because you can build up with tape to increase grip width and weight. Byrson is a classic example of this. Even his putter grip is like a 2x4. Tony Finau uses a Lamkin grip with 13 wraps on the left(upper) hand and 12 wraps on his right (lower) hand. Don't even know if I can tell the difference between 13 and 12 wraps under a grip! Some like the larger size grips, Golf Pride, Wynn, Lamkin et al, jumbo's and add wraps. Last season I had an MMC+4 standard with three wraps, this season MCC+4 Midsize. feels the same. Like all of us, I just want to feel the club head is where I want it to be thru the swing.
  9. Thanks for all the reply’s. Great info!
