    Hey All,

I am looking for some advice on improving my game- I am currently about a 2 handicap but am VERY inconsistent- I can score anywhere from the low 80's to the mid 60's (mostly stay in the low to mid 70s) on any given day and it totally depends on whether or not I can get my swing in sync. I used to play collegiately at the University of Toledo and Otterbein College but since graduation have not had the time I would like to dedicate myself to a PGA Proffesional to get more consistent.

My major swing flaw is a continued back swing and wrist breakdown that continues after my shoulders stope and causes the club face to be shut at the top of the swing, this flaw also promotes a regrip to take place transitioning into my downswing. (club actually turns in my hand- CLOSED) To save the shot I have developed and underneath move or as I call it "hold on for dear life and don't let my hands release move" that again depending on my timing allows me to square the club face up coming into impact. As you can imagine this is very inconsistent.

I am currently working on widening my take away off the ball and incorporating a little more pause at the top of my backswing in order to set my hands and wrists firmly and shorten my swing which I hope will set me up for a more consistently delivery of the club down through impact. I also am working on letting the club fall first rather than starting the downswing with my shoulders.

Has anyone our there experienced a reqrip with their swing or worked through a closed club face at the top of their swing?- Does anyone have any drills that might help me shorten my swing up and allow the clubface to be a little more square at the top without sacrificing distance?

    Any Help would be appreciated!

Hi Matt, I am PGA Member in Florida. Sounds like you have a lot going on. It would be hard to address all of what you have posted without what hint you swing but I do have one thought that I have used with players that take the club away to far. I would start with a 9 iron, put a head cover under both armpits. Don't hit any balls at first, just try to brush the top of the grass. Maybe put a tee in the ground and try to hit it. The goal here is to be able make a swing without loosing the head covers until after impact. Go slow this will feel fairly odd. I always like to remind my players that if you focus on you chest turning you will see some improvement. Graduate to hitting balls off of a low tee for awhile, then move to hitting on the turf. Hope this helps.
