I just spent the last 3 days listening and learning from some of the foremost experts in the field of Golf, Fitness and Biomechanics at the TPI World Golf Fitness Summit. Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips put together an amazing lineup of speakers to share their knowledge with over 700 golf pros, fitness trainers, sports coaches and golf medical specialists. The opening speaker, Dick Vermeil set the tone, talking about leadership, coaching and instruction. He talked about caring, and building relationships with his players. His theme was that the players didn't care how much he knew until they knew how much he cared. It was inspiring listening to him.
There were over 40 speakers during the 3 days and the topics ranged from understanding how to access your capabilities in the face of fear, whether its the fear of missing a putt or fear of playing poorly, to how to train juniors and girls, injury assessment and pain management, 3D analysis, nutrition and developing power or hitting it 30 yards further. They talked about ground reaction force and how stabilizing your feet could help you gain distance, to how to build your business model. A mind boggling amount of information was shared with the attendees.
One of the common threads that ran through many of the speakers talks was that you could not be a successful coach, teacher, trainer or leader if you didn't care about the person you were helping. And that you also needed to build a team with a golf pro fitness trainer and medical Dr. to work together because one person cannot be an expert in all fields.
If you are working with a golf pro or a fitness trainer or a medical Dr. and you golf, you should ask them if they are TPI certified. It is knowledge that will help them to help you.
