Can you believe it. I injured my left groin over doing it at the gym a few days ago. It is getting better and on line info says to rest for at least 72 hours before doing any exercises. I was suppose to play golf yesterday but I could hardly walk much less swing a club. Anyone else have this kind of injury and how long did it take you to get back to a normal routine ?

Hope it's just a groin pull and not a sports hernia (athletic pubalgia...look it up...not like a regular hernia). I had to have surgery for the hernia, though was able to piece together a few more months of uncomfortable golf before having the surgery out of season. 3-4 months recovery. If it's a groin pull, you'll likely be fine in a week.

Had a hernia a couple years ago, took two full months to recover after surgery. Stuff down in that neighborhood is painful. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Did you see a doctor?

I was able to progressively get back into my routine after a couple weeks. Everybody's recovery will be different just based on variables such as physical shape, age, and the fact that people heal at different rates. Also, the severity of the injury will determine how long you could be out. There are a few things that you can do to help the heal process. You can apply ice for 20 minutes every few hours for a couple days, you can wrap your thigh in an elastic bandage, or you could look up a few stretches to do when most of the pain has subsided. I think the key thing to remember is not to come back too soon because reinjuring it could mean an even longer recovery period or permanent damage to the area. You can always take this time to work on a little putting. Good luck

That's why us old guys gave up exercise years ago, helps prevent injuries. No seriously have no idea but wish you the best in a speedy recovery.

Dwayne, I'd like to amend your comment. Having a sedentary-style work area, I have increase exercise in my mid-60's. But have worked with trainers for specialized golf-friendly exercises. Lots of stretching and core exercises while not directly pumping iron for body building. I've had lower back issues for 20 years and just finished a stretch of 7 rounds in 8 days in 3 time zones. Not one shred of back strain. I've lost some strength and speed since 50, but exercise has improved my lifestyle, on an off the course. Those guys under 35 on the PGA tour can be gym rats with strength training. I'm doing just fine working to reverse the effects of a work career sitting down.

Hey Don --- very well stated! As I have gotten older, I have had to work hard to keep weight down, cardiovascular fitness in decent shape and as you succinctly put it -- keep strengthening the core muscle group and stay flexible1

And I used to be an elite athlete when I was young, but had a sedentary working life! I think this is the best way to continue playing golf well into the later stages of life too!

I appreciate your answers to my issue. I looked up sports hernia and that is a scary scenario. I work out regularly at my local gym 2 to 3 times a week so I was not doing anything abnormal. I think I just did not rest enough times between sets and just strained a ligament/muscle. I did 3 days of ibuprophen and ice and am feeling almost normal (95%). Went back to the gym today and did nothing but stretching and a few groin exercises and some walking. I hate that I have missed a week of golf but I have done some putting and worked on chipping (soft rubber golf ball) in the house. I am not going to play any this week just to make sure I don't aggravate anything because I am planning on elk hunting in a couple of weeks.

Come on Don O and Dino J, didn't mean to ruffle feathers just a little lite humor around getting older. I too have a "sedentary-style work area" and I too have to work harder than in years past to maintain weight and flexibility. Sorry if I offended any of my aging fellow Team Titleist members was not my intent what so ever.

Hi Dwayne! I chuckled when I read your posting - so no offense was taken! :-) I was echoing Don's points about how a good physical fitness program helps maintain flexibility, strength, etc.

For the record I started playing again a week ago. First couple of rounds I wore some compression underwear and was a little sore, but I hit 115 range balls two days ago and played yesterday and I'm 100 % back. I will not do anymore lower body machines for another couple of weeks just to be on the safe side. When you get old golf is like playing in the NFL. Players in my group are out with groin, shoulder, back, neck, knee, ankle, etc. the list goes on.
