  1. Headed to Williamsburg this year. Does anyone have any insights on the following courses we will be playing?

Golden Horseshoe Gold and Green Williamsburg National Yorktown and Jamestown Royal New Kent Stonehouse

    Thanks, E

W&M alumnus here and have spent lots of time in the Burg.

Golden Horsehose Gold is very good, right in the middle of Colonial Williamsburg and featuring a terrific set of par threes. The course record, just four under par, was set on opening day by Jack Nicklaus. That stood until 2006 (when Boyd Summerhays shot 60 in a college event). A classic course that plays harder than it looks.

Green course isn't nearly as good. Rees Jones, lots of mounding, longer but easier than the Gold, but not in the same league architecturally.

Williamsburg National is on a flatter piece of property but features 36 holes if you want to pack in a full day. Stays busy.

Royal New Kent is a Mike Strantz masterpiece (his second solo design). It's big, bold, and fun. The fishhook par five is a real highlight.

Stonehouse opened one year after Royal New Kent and has been through several ownership changes. It's back, though, and I really like it. Several blind shots but super fun green complexes and another chance to play a Strantz original.

If time allows, grab a sandwich at the Cheese Shop on DOG Street and go eat in the Sunken Gardens behind the Wren Building.

    Hope this helps,

    WW
